Small end table made by a student of BYOF (build your own furniture) over two weekends in my studio. Made of solid wood (white ash), stained in light walnut color and hardwax oil finish applied. Students started with rough cut lumber and used several woodworking and carpentry processes to make the finished product

Students learnt how to apply basecoat sanding sealer to Baltic birch plywood. A necessary step to avoid blotching of color when applying stain

End tables coming together. Next the students will make a drawer each which they will attempt to piston fit (no drawer slides) and fix the drawer front. Oh!, and a shelf at the bottom to keep a book or two.

A knot or a gash in the wood is not a bad thing. It’s natural, it’s how the tree lived before coming to the studio as timber to have a new life. It’s important to Celebrate the imperfections in the wood as the way nature has given. However to protect from future decay, fill it with epoxy resin. Once dried, sanded and with an oil finish it has a beautiful sheen, accentuating the piece.

3 sets of Legs, top and other small parts of the side table made by students of BYOF (build your own furniture) this weekend. It’s all solid wood (ash). Took two days to reach this stage from raw timber. One more weekend to go for final assembly, applying stain and oil finish.

The students are making this side table - in solid wood (ash). They start from rough timber and go through several woodworking processes using modern power tools with all safety precautions to make it themselves.

A student of BYOF using a biscuit jointer in the process of making a wide panel for the top of a side table. This the first day of a two weekend class to build a side table using solid wood (white ash) from scratch.

Students use a variety of modern woodworking machinery and learn furniture making techniques while making a contemporary piece of furniture all by themselves. Check out website in profile or contact me if you are interested in enrolling for a similar class.
