1 YEAR OF FENICE! 🐦‍🔥📚🥂
As some of you might know, La Fenice is a true labor of love. My partner in crime (and in life) and I are still juggling our full-time day jobs - because, well… this phoenix is still a baby bird learning to fly.

Today we celebrate our first year in business, and we couldn’t be happier and more grateful for the incredibly warm welcome from the bookseller community and our first clients.

This year has exceeded every expectation - in fun, in connection, and yes, even in sales!

If someone had told me almost 20 years ago, when I was still in Italy and left the book world behind to start a completely different career, that one day I’d return with our own little shop in California… I would have called them crazy.

So here’s to the twists and turns of life, the unexpected returns that are very much a propelled forward rather than a “going back” , and the surprising magic of the phoenix’s rebirth.

Starting the week uphill?? We got you, and this Monday calls for wine and a wine book! 🍷📚
From Stir Crazy wine club, a Syrah by O S A M A J O R W I N E S in Mendocino, one of the few Californian wines that our European palate actually likes! Ironically paired with Charles Tovey’s Wine and Wine Countries (London, 1862), who couldn’t fathom the idea of quality wine (let alone Hermitage’s noble grape ) on the American soil.
And the background? A group of women from a psychiatric institution, painted by Achille Incerti about a century ago. Rendered with surprising delicacy and a touching, almost naïve style, it feels like the perfect companion to a Monday glass of wine.

1618, there’s a new strange light in the sky. It turns out to be the famous “Great Comet”, one of the brightest comets of the early modern period. And our guy, the Swiss mathematician and astronomer Johann Baptist Cysat, is there to map it against a cute bear… I mean, the Ursa Mayor. Can’t be cooler than this!

1688, Sacro Monte di Varallo (Piemonte 🇮🇹). Walking these hills is a quirky, charming late-Renaissance “multimedia” experience, made even better with a glass of the local renowned wine, Gattinara. Can you imagine how it was 400 years ago? This print might help 🍷🎨
