ご存じの方もいると思いますが
私たちの農場は3つの区画に分かれています
今日はついに、最も小さな最後の区画に取り掛かりました
そして、なんと堆肥を耕しています！
えっ、耕す😱
不耕起農法じゃないの？
矛盾しているように聞こえるかもしれませんが
こんな経緯があります
最初の2区画に取り掛かったとき、以前木が育っていた場所に硬い層が20〜25cm下にあることが分かりました。当時は大きなトラクターが使えず、「土起こし君」を試してみたものの硬すぎて刺さりませんでした。
それで、下に掘るのではなく、上に作る方法を採用しました。畝間を深く掘り、畝を高くする方法で土壌を改良しています。しかし、この作業は非常に労働集約的で、進みはゆっくりです💦せっかく始めたので、全てを再耕するのはもったいないです😓
でも、この3区画目では違う方法を試しました
近所の畜産農家さんのおかげで、大きなトラクターを使い、牛堆肥と一緒に一度きりの深耕ができました
この区画には素晴らしいスタートが切れました！
As some of you may know, our farm is divided into three plots. Today, we’re finally working on the smallest and last one. And yes… we’re plowing compost into it!
Wait, plowing? 😱
Aren’t we a no-till farm?
We know it might sound contradictory, but here’s the story: When we started working on the first two plots, we discovered that the soil had a hardpan (20-25 cm deep) where trees used to grow. With no big tractor available at the time, we tried breaking through it with a broadfork, but it was too hard😰
So, we began building up instead of going down—digging deeper pathways and building higher beds. This approach is still ongoing and very labor-intensive, so progress has been slow. Since we’ve already started, it would be a shame to re-plow everything again.
But for this third plot, we decided to take a different approach: Thanks to our amazing neighbor, a cattle farmer, we got to use a big tractor to do a one-time deep tilling with cow compost. This is a game-changer for this plot, setting a solid foundation for future no-till farming. Hurray! 🎉
