I always start the day the same way: a warm melon-pan and black coffee.

Before that, pieces are set out the night before.
It gives motivation.

After the caffeine hits, I go straight in.

By the end of the day,
one melon-pan 🥯 somehow lasted the whole day,
and the bigger pieces are still waiting.

That’s fine. Kintsugi doesn’t rush.
There’s always tomorrow.

What’s your kintsugi routine?

Urushi restored strength.
Only then do we enter the final 5%, with equal attentiveness.

Gold is not decoration.
It is acknowledgment of the invisible work beneath it.
Can you see “Before the Gold”?

Most people think kintsugi = gold lines.
Gold is actually the final 5%.

Before that comes
Structure.
Alignment.
Patience.
Control.
Time.

The invisible work is what makes the visible beauty possible.

In traditional kintsugi, the first goal is not decoration, but to restore strength.

Bonding the ceramic with mugi-urushi (flour + lacquer). Refining surfaces with sabi-urushi.
We wait. And wait again.
Stability achieved, then tinkerbell it with gold.

When urushi is used properly, you get resilience.
Not just shiny lines over putty and glue.

Kintsugi is not about making cracks pretty.
It’s about restoring integrity.

Use the gold to elegantly acknowledge the work beneath it.

Mottainai is not a trendy philosophy. It’s a mentality.

In Japan, we are always thinking:
How can this be used again?
(And yes — throwing things away literally costs money. We even pay for official city trash bags for our daily domestic garbage.)

These large mesh sheets are used only once in the urushi refining / wringing process. Technically, they’ve done their job.

But they’re still strong. Still full of potential. So we keep them.

Now, they become structural reinforcement material in kintsugi repairs — sturdy enough to support, yet soft enough to bend and follow a broken form.

At one point, we even considered turning them into small carrying bags.

Who needs Issey Miyake polyesters when we have this all-natural material? 😅 UrushiPlease, anyone?

Waste less. Think deeper. Use what already exists.
The world will be lovelier. 🥰

Good kintsugi doesn’t start with gold.
It starts with how you treat your tools.

An extreme close-up tells the story:
Needle-sharp cat-hair maki-e brush tips—some started to flare from use.

Handmade brushes remember every stroke.
Pressure, care, shortcuts—they all leave a trace.

Clean them well in oil.
Reshape the tip. Conditioned them. Refresh the oil. Keep the cap on.

Treat your tools as extensions of your hands. In kintsugi and maki-e, the tool becomes calibrated to the maker.
Respect it, and it returns precision.
Neglect it, and it resists you.

Look for our Geeky Brush Talk in our video library to see the uniqueness of these Maki-e cat-hair brushes.
