CURATION⇄FAIR - Why has the white cube become the space for art?
White walls. Empty spaces for isolation. Even lighting from the ceiling.
By quietly receding decorative and architectural elements of the surrounding environment, the white cube directs our attention toward the artwork itself.
Art critic Brian O’Doherty described the ideal gallery as one that “subtracts from the artwork all cues that interfere with the fact that it is ‘art.’”
By minimizing the cues surrounding a work, artworks, particularly those of the modern era and after, can stand out as self-contained entities. Presented against the consistent backdrop of the white cube, works become easier to compare, allowing differences in colour, form, material, and scale to come into sharper focus.
What may appear to be an unassuming space is, in fact, carefully designed to shape how we look at art. It is precisely this deliberate restraint that has made the white cube a standard setting for viewing art in museums, galleries, and art fairs.
And what if we were to look at art, somewhere other than the white cube──
