POJ Studio Discover the beauty of Japanese craftsmanship by learning about it’s history and modern use POJ Studio addresses this issue by:

1. and further.

Japan has one of the most beautiful arts & crafts in the world, but the craftspeople behind it live in a time where it is extremely difficult to find successors. The tragedy in this is that a lot of the arts & crafts are dying out because of that. Raising awareness and finding out if there's interest outside of Japan for these products

2. If there is enough interest, to bring those products to th

e people interested

3. Building an ecosystem that supports the craftsmen to find ways of keeping the tradition alive

This is my first step in raising awareness and finding out if there is an interest for these arts & crafts in the world to see if I can/should move on to 3. I see where this leads and if you can help me make this happen :)

A true embodiment of evergreen, the hinoki tree (Japanese cypress) is a continuous feature of Japanese living.

Known for its strength and durability, hinoki timber has been favoured in Japanese construction for centuries.

Testament to its enduring qualities, the world’s oldest surviving wooden structure, the Hōryū-ji temple in Nara prefecture, was constructed using hinoki.

However, hinoki’s anti-microbial properties and naturally refreshing scent has also positioned it as an ideal material for crafting objects within the home too.

For many of POJ Studio’s artisan partners, the hinoki tree has remained a staple in the evolution of their craftsmanship.

Our collaboration with Nibutani Works () on our Ainu Collection has been deeply meaningful.

We visited Kayano-san, founder of the organization, in Hokkaido. He shared with us the vision for Nibutani Works, what makes Ainu craft traditions so unique, and the legacy he inherited from his grandfather.

Learn more about what aspiration Nibutani Works has for the future, as well as the intentions behind the Ainu Collection in our latest blog.

What began as a group of strangers quickly became a small family.

Over these past weeks, our apprentices dedicated themselves fully to the practice of kintsugi — learning not only techniques, but also patience, observation, adaptability, and care. From first repairs to ambitious final pieces, the amount they accomplished continues to amaze us.

Beyond the studio, they also immersed themselves in Kyoto’s rich craft culture, forming meaningful connections with local artisans, workshops, and the wider Japanese craft community. It was incredibly special to watch these exchanges and friendships take shape throughout the season.

Thank you all for your hard work, trust, and beautiful energy. We cannot wait to see where your kintsugi journeys continue from here.

Embrace the organic texture of washi paper with our washi placemats and coasters.

A craft with over 1000 years of history, washi paper production is one of Japan’s most notable crafts. Created from the bark of the mulberry tree (kozo), washi paper is both strong and durable.

Created by Kyoto-based artisan Tete, our washi coasters and placemats are part of a sustainable initiative. Each piece is hand crafted from leftover material from larger pieces of washi paper.

Available in multiple light or dark tones and coated in a waterproof finish, they are a diverse addition to any tablescape.

Artistry, technical mastery, and custodianship collide with the making of our rōketsuzome noren.

A specialist wax and water dyeing process, rōketsuzome originated in Kyoto 1200 years ago. By dipping linen in wax, crinkling it underwater after it hardens, and allowing dye to settle in the disruptions of the wax coating, the textile takes on a one-of-a-kind abstract pattern.

Today, our maker-partners Shobien studio are the last remaining facility to specialise in the dyeing technique in Kyoto.

Impassioned by the need to preserve Japanese material heritage, they work tirelessly executing feats of technical mastery alongside passing these techniques on to future generations.

At POJ Studios we are proud to support Shobien in their role as custodians of this millennium-old craft.

With a history stretching back 1000 years, the Aoi Matsuri is one of Japan’s most visually arresting processions.

Over 500 participants, dressed in historically accurate Heian-period costume, journey from Kyoto’s imperial palace to the Kamigamo shrine.

The festival is believed to have originated after natural disasters struck Japan in the 6th century. Understood as punishments from the deities, an imperial envoy was dispatched to offer ritual and appeasement at the Kamigamo shrine.

The festival is named Aoi Mastsuri, after the Japanese word for hollyhock, since the aoi leaves are used to decorate all manner of procession participants, including people, horses, and oxen.

In sashiko, every stitch is intentional. Humble in origin, this traditional style of embroidery fosters a warm connection between the makers and the users.

Akiyama-san is an employee at Teras — a mission-driven company that uses sashiko to provide opportunity to the wider community. His history with and philosophy of sashiko highlights the warmth and desire to connect with those around the world who bring his pieces into their homes.
