One of the most common questions I get is what markers I use when tracing stencil patterns on my fabric.
My answer is simple—
water-erasable pens. (occasionally air erasable pens)
Which means…
the markings disappear when sprayed or washed with water.
But I don’t stick to just one brand. I like to try what’s available.
Before I use any pen, I always:
• read the instructions
• and test it on the same fabric I’m using in my quilt. Because fabric reacts differently.
I also learned NEVER TO APPLY heat on markings. It can set the ink… and make it permanent.
I know some quilters avoid certain markers, it’s completely valid.
But results are not absolute.
Different fabrics, different dyes, even temperature and humidity can affect how the ink behaves.
So don’t hesitate to TEST, OBSERVE, and TRUST your own experience. 😊😍
