The origins of Kamakura-bori date back to the 13th century, when Buddhist sculptors influenced by carved lacquerware from China started to create wood-carved, coloured lacquer Buddhist altar fittings. During the Edo period, as the tea ceremony became more widespread, tea utensils such as tea caddies, incense containers and incense trays began to be made in the Kamakura-bori style, which evoked a sense of wabi and sabi.
The “Kamakurayama Yubokumin”, a group of people who indulge themselves in the world of wood and urushi, gather under the direction of wood-urushi craftsman ENDO Hideaki. The individualistic members have freely come up with ideas and let their imagination sparkle to create whatever their inspirations navigate to.
Come and enjoy the spring time in Kamakura during 17-21 April!
