Continuing with the series of the painted vases, this one incorporates wave patters. It’s like water yet also like wind. Motifs on here include the violin, birds, leaf patterns and hidden letters. I was pleased by how the blue color turned out in the waves.

Motifs that are on this pottery piece are, the Kenyan flag, the RVA buffalo symbol (my school in Kenya), birds to represent the nature there, and African fabric patterns.

It was nice reflecting about my time there. This piece now resides in my high school teacher’s house now 🙂

Recently I’ve been learning how to paint with traditional Korean colours. I’ve been trying to combine patterns I’ve seen in Malawian fabrics and reflections of my time in Africa.

A vase filled with reflection, history and tradition. I think thats why I find pottery fascinating. It captures multiple identities and cultures.

This one is mostly filled with leaves, henna designs, rainbows and sunsets. It’s interesting seeing my work change depending on which environment I place myself in. Now that I’m in Korea I guess it makes sense that a more Korean style starts to emerge in my work.

1st photo: my mom in Malawi
2nd photo: .ororke in England
3rd photo: in Korea

Pottery and non pottery teachers all have been such a big influence. There are so many teachers unnamed that I owe a lot to. Maybe one day I can be like them in my own way. Still finding my own path and trying to define what that looks like.

Not much has changed I guess. Some may have already seen this photo but it’s my younger self and my current self. Sometimes I question why I do pottery and start trying other things, but that’s when I start longing to touch clay again. So here I am, still painting on dirt, many many years later. I like working with clay. So here I’ll stay, practice, and grow.
