Celadon Maebyeong (Prunus Vase) with Inlaid Plum, Bamboo, and Crane Design (Part 3) - Inlaying Black Slip

This piece is currently being worked on, referencing the 13th-century Goryeo artifact 'Celadon Prunus Vase with Inlaid Plum, Bamboo, and Crane Design (Treasure No. 903),' housed in the National Museum of Korea. Shaped on a kick wheel, the focus was on recreating the elegant lines unique to Goryeo maebyeong, featuring broad, voluminous shoulders that taper steeply toward the foot, along with its delicate inlaid motifs.

This video shows the process of inlaying black slip (Heuk-sanggam) into the previously incised bamboo motifs and the detailed parts of the crane, such as its beak, feathers, and legs.

After applying the black slip over the incised carvings and allowing it to dry, the surface is scraped and trimmed, leaving a distinct black motif securely settled into the celadon clay body. The black slip, which currently has a natural earthy brown tone, will develop into the deep, rich black characteristic of historical inlaid celadon artifacts after a 6-day high-temperature firing in a wood-fired kiln.

The completed piece will be finished after a 3-day bisque firing and a 6-day high-temperature firing in a wood-fired kiln.

This is a technique transmitted through six generations from the master.

This piece is currently being worked on, referencing the 13th-century Goryeo artifact 'Celadon Prunus Vase with Inlaid Plum, Bamboo, and Crane Design (Treasure No. 903),' housed in the National Museum of Korea. Shaped on a kick wheel, the focus was on recreating the elegant lines unique to Goryeo maebyeong, featuring broad, voluminous shoulders that taper steeply toward the foot.

This video shows the process of filling the previously incised areas with white slip (Baek-sanggam). Specifically, the white clay is meticulously inlaid into the crane's body, plum blossoms, the Ruyi head motif at the top, and the thunder motif (fret design) at the bottom. Once the slip dries and the surface is trimmed, the distinct white motifs will settle securely into the celadon clay body.

The crane is a representative motif frequently found in the history of Korean ceramics. Depicted with detailed feathers and natural curves to bring it to life, it symbolizes the integrity and nobility of scholars and aristocrats, reflecting the religious background of the Goryeo period.

The completed piece will be finished after a 3-day bisque firing and a 6-day high-temperature firing in a wood-fired kiln.

Celadon Maebyeong (Prunus Vase) with Reverse Inlaid Peony Design (Part 6) - Incising Fine Details on the Lid

This is the process of incising fine lines to detail the peony flowers and leaves revealed on the lid through the reverse inlay technique, referencing the designs of Goryeo celadon artifacts from the 12th and 13th centuries.

Detailed lines, such as the texture of the petals and leaf veins, are delicately carved into the relief-like peony motif on the lid that emerged after scraping away the background white slip, using a hand-crafted carving knife. This process adds depth to the two-dimensional motif, completing the exquisite decorative beauty unique to Goryeo celadon.

It is a process of maximizing the refinement of the motif by applying a complex approach: utilizing the 'reverse inlay' (Yeoksanggam) technique to create color contrast by carving out the background and filling it with slip, followed by adding delicate incised lines on top.

The completed piece will be finished after a 3-day bisque firing and a 6-day high-temperature firing in a wood-fired kiln.

This is a technique transmitted through six generations from the master.

Celadon Maebyeong (Prunus Vase) with Reverse Inlaid Peony Design (Part 5) - Carving the Motif on the Lid

This is the process of carving a peony motif and applying white slip onto the lid of the maebyeong, referencing the designs of 12th- and 13th-century Goryeo celadon artifacts.

Consistent with the main body, the peony flowers and stems are incised onto the curved surface of the lid. The background is then carved away to make the motif stand out in relief, followed by the application of white slip over the surface.

This decorative method is known as the 'reverse inlay' (Yeoksanggam) technique. Unlike the standard inlay technique, which carves the motif itself and fills it with slip to apply color, this technique reverses the color contrast between the motif and the background by carving out the background and filling it with slip. It is a distinctive style primarily identified in Goryeo celadon artifacts.

The completed piece will be finished after a 3-day bisque firing and a 6-day high-temperature firing in a wood-fired kiln.

This is a technique transmitted through six generations from the master.

Celadon Maebyeong (Prunus Vase) with Reverse Inlaid Peony Design (Part 3) - Scraping the Slip

This is the process of scraping off the dried white slip on the surface of the maebyeong to reveal the motif, referencing the designs of Goryeo celadon artifacts from the 12th and 13th centuries.

Once the white slip applied to the carved background in the previous step has dried, the surface of the vessel is scraped and trimmed. Through this process, the covering slip is removed, revealing the relief-carved peony flowers and stems in the natural color of the celadon clay body, while only the recessed background remains filled with the white slip, creating a sharp visual contrast.

This decorative method is known as the 'reverse inlay' (Yeoksanggam) technique. Unlike the standard inlay technique, which carves the motif itself and fills it with slip to apply color, this technique reverses the color contrast between the motif and the background by carving out the background and filling it with slip. Celadon Maebyeong (Prunus Vase) with Reverse Inlaid Peony Design (Part 2) - Carving the Background and Applying Slip

This is the process of carving a peony motif onto a maebyeong, referencing the designs of Goryeo celadon artifacts from the 12th and 13th centuries, followed by carving away the surrounding background and applying white slip.

Leaving only the shapes of the peony flowers and stems incised in the previous step, the background of the surface is carved away broadly to make the motif stand out in relief. Afterward, white slip is applied evenly over the carved background and left to dry. When the surface is later trimmed, the motif will retain the natural color of the celadon clay body, while only the background will be filled with the white slip.

This decorative method is known as the 'reverse inlay' (Yeoksanggam) technique. Celadon Maebyeong with Reverse Inlaid Peony Design (Part 1) - Carving the Peony Motif

This is the process of carving a peony motif onto a maebyeong, referencing the designs of Goryeo celadon artifacts from the 12th and 13th centuries.

This process involves incising peony flowers and stems that completely cover the surface—a design frequently observed in Goryeo celadon artifacts. Subsequently, the surrounding background is carved away, leaving only the motif to stand out in relief. When white slip is applied over it, dried, and the surface is trimmed, the motif retains the natural color of the celadon clay body, while the background is filled with the white slip.

This decorative method is known as the 'reverse inlay' (Yeoksanggam) technique. Trimming a Celadon Bottle (Ju-byeong) on the Kick Wheel

This is the process of trimming a piece shaped on the kick wheel, focusing on recreating the elegant lines unique to celadon bottle (Ju-byeong) artifacts produced during the peak of Goryeo celadon in the 12th and 13th centuries.

Potter Lim Gyeong-mun previously operated 'Udong Doyo' in the 'Udong-ri' area of Buan-gun, where he researched the technique of reproducing celadon artifacts by analyzing pottery shards from nearby kiln sites. Buan-gun, where Udong Doyo was located, was a major historical production site for numerous celadon wares. Based on the extensive research on celadon forms and motifs accumulated there, along with the teachings from the master, the reproduction work of shaping celadon on a kick wheel continues.

The trimmed celadon bottle will be decorated with various motifs from celadon artifacts using multiple techniques, and will be completed after a 3-day bisque firing and a 6-day high-temperature firing in a wood-fired kiln.

This is a technique transmitted through six generations from the master.
