Hey guys! I had planned on my next update being a website release, with lots of new handcrafted pieces.. But, alas, my kiln started consistently under-firing recently, which means I needed to start the process of ordering new elements. Fun, fun, but hey, installing elements will be a new learning opportunity! Hopefully I get it right, because they’re not cheap 🤪.

Anyways, one of my last successful firings included these tablets (two tablets, each front and back). They’re the Ten Commandments, with Hebrew and English, made for our church’s upcoming vacation Bible school. The goal was the have them be sapphire like the original, but I was afraid the carved wording wouldn’t be easy to see, so I decided to wipe away some of the glaze. Ultimately, I think they turned out pretty neat, though a little rough around the edges (literally and figuratively).

For some reason being covered in a white clay seems less messy than darker clays 🤪. I’m absolutely loving this new clay I got to try as a mid-fire porcelain. I’ve only ever thrown stoneware, but this porcelain is sooo fun! Hopefully things dry well, and don’t crack.. Then fire well, and don’t crack.. Then glaze well, and don’t crack.. Sometimes working in new clay results in, you guessed it, cracking. I love working with this clay body so much that I really hope it works out! Oh, and my makeshift pottery studio doesn’t have a/c, so real sweat is going into each peice made! 😅 My focus lately has been to refine my mug making skills. So, hopefully I’ll have lots available soon (on a new website, that I’ll also share soon)!

The soap dishes pictured here (with the flower) were made using a butter mold that belonged to my Dad’s Grandad Artie. The mold is cracked, but beautiful. The flower in the mold is deep enough that I have to stamp it separately, then score and slip it into place for the dish. I then pinch up the edges for the quaint finishing touch. They have to dry slowly, as to not warp up, so that they can stay flat. They’re then bisque fired to cone 04, or about 1,950 degrees. After that, once cooled, and I brush on various glazes. Finally, they’re glaze fired to a hot cone 6, of about 2,230-2,270 degrees. 🤍🤍

A fun little piece that I got to unload from the kiln today. I’m so happy that it turned out okay!

It’s a bit of a lengthy video, but here’s an idea of what I’ve been up to. Honestly, my time to product ratio is pretty poor. Ideally, I would have a lot more pieces made, given the time I’ve invested (and have yet to still invest before things are finished).. It’s been fun though (most of the time anyways 🤪)!

Here’s a larger piece that I have dual purpose ideas for.. I cut two oval holes at each base, with the idea being that rubber piggy bank plugs will fit in each hole after firing. Did you know clay shrinks as it dries? Hopefully my shrinkage estimate is close! With plugs, this could possibly serve as a piggy bank. If the plugs don’t fit (or even if they do) this could instead be a vase for dried greenery. We’ll see!

My non-symmetrical pattern planning might make me twitch a little, but I’m trying to beat down the perfectionist in me just a bit 🤣. Hopefully this little travel mug will fire and glaze well!
