Meet raw stoneware cups. Made to be used and to age well.

The debate if a cup needs a handle or not is a big one. In my practice, I don't feel like handles fit my kurinuki cups, and it would take another lifetime for me to add them. But once in a while, people ask if I make such, and I get it - I also sometimes need a handle. Some mornings just ask for it.

So while thinking about a more classic approach to a cup, I really took my time with these, trying to find my way that wouldn't feel forced.

The result - formed by hand using a combination of pinching and carving techniques, making each cup sit comfortably in a hand. The exteriors are unglazed, with visible cracks, wrinkles, and grains of the material. Some got more, some less. While raw, the surfaces are polished and burnished, and with every use and wash, they're going to become even smoother.

Closer look at kurinuki cup no.2.

As the number indicates, No.2 is one of the first ones in my kurinuki journey. It changed a bit since the first ones. For quite some time I even gave up on this design, as the change in materials during my move from Berlin to Lithuania affected its look. Its current phase, however, is very much loved - only one is left from this batch on the shop.

White matte glaze is beautiful, yet I find it even more beautiful when you go a bit offroad with it here and there. The little bubbles left intentionally give that little something extra.

One more from the kurinuki cups collection: no.14. 🪐

Calls for tea immediately. Finely carved textures enriched by a rich red glaze, creating quite an elegant match. The most fun part - the metallic glaze shimmers when filled with transparent liquid.

Closer look at the newest addition to kurinuki cups collection: no.15

Bony, but flowy. Dramatically shifting from raw material to softer glassy surface. Carved from a single piece of beige stoneware, with partly unglazed exterior. Inside and rim glazed in glossy with a bit of pearlescent effect.

When carving these, I felt a bit Gaudi-like. Not to compare, but I was trying to grasp what it took to build those monumental works, when it already feels that quite a lot goes into making even a single small object.

I have an enormous respect for earlier artists and craftsmen and how they managed to collaborate with materials. I say collaborate, because in my opinion, that's when the magic happens. Observing nature, learning the science of your craft, obsessing about it - not to control it, but to learn to listen and to know how to bring your vision to life. At the end of the day, these materials were here before us.

Closer look at the newest addition to the kurinuki cups collection: no. 19. 🪐

Rough on the exterior, soft on the inside. This brick-red clay feels especially powerful when left unglazed, and the kurinuki carving reveals its natural texture and particles even more. It would be a shame to hide it.

Another addition to the kurinuki cup collection: no.17 🪐

One of the softer ones from the collection. Subtly melting, slightly wider silhouette with wavy carving. Satin glaze has a bit of a stone feel with various shades from sage to olive that vary a lot depending on the making and firing conditions, and my mood at the time.
