Scenes from the studio: new red clay kurinuki tea bowls and cups in a making.

After weeks in the studio making, I'm at the last kiln firing - photos and the shop update are next. The red clay is pretty exciting. I am mostly keeping the pieces made from it raw this time, letting my favorite part – textures of clay speak for itself. More soon! ⌛

Sketches on paper and in clay for a new commissioned project.

I don’t sketch very often. I usually have the initial idea in my head, but with my chosen technique being kurinuki, the final form is very much guided by the material and how my hands work at that specific moment. I like the little surprise effect it creates. But sketches have their own charm. 🪐

Some irony from the studio: there are times when I say I need to take more photos because I don’t have anything to share. And then I take photos (way too many, actually), spend hours selecting, and end up sharing only a few… or none.

And I’m already making the next bowls. So let’s enjoy these for a little longer, while the new ones are drying.

Pictured: making one of the first kurinuki bowls from black stoneware. By looking at them, I can see the shift in my work — the first ones tended to be more subtle and safe, and with each new piece, I am drawn to more dramatic edges, cracks, and experimental textures. Kind of mimicking life, once again.
