Let me just start by saying if you don’t have patience and you use to vex too quickly, don’t even bother reading this book because you’ll vex from the beginning until you almost get to the end.
This book is basically about a woman’s journey to freedom.
We see Ogadinma go through so many struggles, she endured rubbish of the highest order you guys!
From being r***d by the man who was supposed to help her gain admission into school at 17, to her getting pregnant and aborting it, to her dad flogging her mercilessly when he found out what she had done without asking questions and then sending her off to live with his brother in Lagos, to her being married off to a man who is older than her by almost 20 years, to her enduring verbal, emotional and physical abuse that landed her in the hospital when she was pregnant, I fought back tears at some point when I couldn’t be angry anymore.

There’s also a part where her husband and his sister took her to a spiritual man who blamed her for her husband’s misfortune and convinced them to leave Ogadinma with him for prayers. This old man r***d her too.

I’ll stop here because I’m getting emotional just by typing all these.
Please read this book so we can all learn and unlearn a lot together.

Someone mentioned that she still thinks of “ you suppose know”. It’s one of the stories from the collection in our book of the week. It’s also one of the stories that had me bawling my eyes out 😅. If you’ve read the book and remember this particular story, share your thoughts in the comments.

I read this book for the first time during my 2nd semester exams in my 3rd year.
I remember starting the book in the afternoon and I couldn’t drop it, not even when my friend, Riri and I left the hostel to go study in an empty classroom on campus.
I made sure I finished every page before I continued reading for my B*H exam( really bold move by the way😂).
I’ve read this book like 3 times after that day and everytime it leaves me with the same emotions.
It’s a collection of short stories.
I don’t have a favourite but I definitely cried after reading the first and last story.
I’m not giving any gists today, just read the book.
It’s totally worth it!

This book explores love in so many dimensions.
Quick story.
Hannah lives in San Francisco. The only family she’s had are her mother and best friend, Flo.
Her father left her mum when he found out she was pregnant and chose to go back to his Nigerian family who were hidden to Hannah’s mum until the pregnancy revelation.
A random night while Hannah is out with her friend, she meets Lawrence and is captivated by him but their conversation is cut short because Lawrence gets a devastating call and has to leave.
Shortly after, her mum calls her to come over and breaks the news of her father’s death and also that she was invited to Nigeria for the funeral.
She is pi**ed and uncertain but eventually decides to attend.
Hannah arrives in Lagos, Nigeria and sees the country with fresh eyes. She ends up in Banana Island where her Father’s family lives. Dayo, the Lawyer welcomes her and ushers her to the living room where her father’s wife and siblings are all sitted confused. She also sees Lawrence from San Francisco and is suprised but soon finds out he grew up with her family because they took him in after his mother who worked for them, died.

The family lawyer explains to everyone that the father left a last wish saying they had to spend a week together with Hannah before the funeral and get to know her.
We see series of drama unfold, Hannah and her siblings unlearning and learning a lot about each other, love festering between Hannah and Lawrence, love being questioned and tested, Hannah learning new things about herself and her identity…

Let me stop here.

Go and read this book if you haven’t.
If you have, you know the drill, let’s gist in the comments.

Do you think Fai’za was too hard on Ahmad based on his values as a Muslim?
At first, I saw her as being a bit judgmental but I like that she stood her ground and let him know he had to stay on track as well.

If you love LOVE, this is definitely for you.
This book starts slow but eventually builds up into such a beautiful love story.
Here’s the gist.

Fai’za and Ahmad are our main characters. They collide at the airport while Fai’za is waiting for her connecting flight and she accuses Ahmad of being rude to her especially because he didn’t apologize for bumping into her. They part ways angrily and soon reconnect in Canada when Fai’za goes to visit her guardian who is a family friend. Ahmad turns out to be the son of her guardian.
Things flow differently from there on with Fai’za and Ahmad spending time together after he opts to drop her off during one of her visits and she decides he wasn’t as bad as she thought.

They go on dates and she eventually starts to spend time at his house to study.
Let me mention that while Fai’za was a very devout Muslim and upheld all the practices she grew up accustomed to, Ahmad on the other hand was a bit laid back and Fai’za didn’t hesitate to call him out on the times when she believed he wasn’t on track.
Ahmad was very respectful and wanted to be better for her which was so beautiful.
They soon started dating and everything was going so smoothly. Ahmad and his parents even decided to go for like an “introduction” to state that Ahmad would like to marry Fai’za.
Things went well o.
Then a controversy erupts that doesn’t bid well for Ahmad and Fai’za.
Their parents found out that Ahmad and Fai’za were both breastfed by the same woman when they were little due to Fai’za’s mum being ill and Ahmad’s being involved in an accident.
Based on their religion, this makes them siblings.
It was so devastating for both of them because asides the fact that they were terribly in love, they had built friendship and the ghen ghen part, they had a secret wedding in Canada and even consummated it.
I’ll stop here.

All I can say is, read ‘Broken’ and see how Ahmad’s resilience got him what he truly wanted.
He fought so hard and even though years went by, it was worth it in the end.
Fatima Bala definitely gave us a memorable love story🤭.
