A new medical technology called histotripsy is changing how some tumors can be treated.
Recently cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the technology uses highly focused ultrasound waves to destroy targeted tumor tissue without making any surgical incisions. Instead of cutting into the body, histotripsy creates microscopic bubbles inside the tumor. These bubbles rapidly expand and collapse, mechanically breaking the tissue into tiny fragments.
The FDA's initial clearance covers the treatment of certain liver tumors. Because the procedure is non invasive, patients may experience shorter recovery times and avoid some of the risks associated with traditional surgery. It may also provide an option for patients who are not ideal candidates for invasive procedures.
Researchers are continuing to investigate whether histotripsy can be used to treat tumors in other organs, including the kidney, pancreas, and prostate. While it is not expected to replace every cancer treatment, experts view it as an important advancement in image-guided, non-invasive tumor therapy.
