πŸ€°πŸ“ **Cervical Dilation & Baby Descent – Easy Guide**
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
πŸ”Ή **0–3 cm (Early Labor)**
- Cervix starts opening slowly
- Mild contractions begin
- Body preparing for labor
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
πŸ”Ή **4–5 cm (Active Labor Begins)**
- Contractions stronger & regular
- Cervix opens faster
- Baby starts moving downward πŸ‘Ά
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
πŸ”Ή **6–7 cm (Accelerated Phase)**
- Rapid dilation ⚑
- Increased pressure & intensity
- Baby’s head descends further
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
πŸ”Ή **8–9 cm (Transition Phase)**
- Most intense stage
- Cervix almost fully open
- Strong urge to push may start
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
πŸ”Ή **10 cm (Fully Dilated)** 🎯
- Cervix completely open
- Baby ready to be delivered
- Active pushing phase begins
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
πŸ’‘ **Important Points**
βœ”οΈ 10 cm = Full dilation
βœ”οΈ Effacement (thinning) happens along with dilation
βœ”οΈ Baby’s head gradually descends into pelvis
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
⚠️ **Remember**
πŸ‘‰ Every labor progresses differently
πŸ‘‰ Time taken can vary from hours to longer
πŸ‘‰ Stay calm & follow medical guidance

Before you push that IV medication, have you checked the cannula to see if it’s patent?

One of the most overlooked steps in patient care is confirming that the line is still patent before administering medications.

A cannula may look fine but may not be working.

That is why when you push medication or fluid, you feel some resistance and the patient screams.

Sometimes, the patient calls you back and informs you that the line is leaking.

So, before administering, you must check for

* Pain at the site
* Redness
* Swelling
* Leakage
* Resistance when flushing

If any of these are present, please stop.
Do not use that line.

And this is where your VIP Score comes in.

Do you know what a VIP score is?

Let me know if you want a further explanation and I’ll do so in another post.

In the meantime, I hope this particular post makes sense to you.

Normal Saline vs Dextrose Saline β€” Are They the Same Drip?
So many people think that all hospital drips are the same, and that any drip can be given for weakness, malaria, or dehydration.
But medically, Normal Saline and Dextrose Saline are not the same.
Normal Saline (0.9% Sodium Chloride)
This drip mainly contains salt and water. It is commonly used for:
β€’ Dehydration
β€’ Fluid replacement
β€’ Diluting some injectable medicines
β€’ Supporting patients who need extra fluids
Dextrose Saline (usually 5% Dextrose + 0.9% Sodium Chloride)
This drip contains glucose (sugar) plus salt and water. It is used when the body needs:
β€’ Energy (glucose)
β€’ Fluid replacement
β€’ Support in some medical conditions where both fluid and glucose are required
Common misuses people should know
In many places, drips are sometimes used unnecessarily or incorrectly, for example:
β€’ Giving drips for ordinary malaria when the patient can drink and take tablets
β€’ Using drips simply because a patient says they feel weak
β€’ Assuming drips will make someone recover faster from every illness
β€’ Mixing too many injections inside one drip without proper guidance
β€’ Using dextrose-containing drips in people with uncontrolled diabetes
Possible concerns
β€’ Unnecessary drips can lead to fluid overload, especially in some patients.
β€’ Dextrose drips may raise blood sugar levels, particularly in diabetics.
β€’ Improper mixing of injections inside drips can sometimes lead to drug incompatibility or reduced effectiveness.
Drips are medical treatments, not just energy boosters.
The right fluid should be chosen based on the patient’s condition, not simply by routine.
