My mum never sat down until everyone had eaten.

She would cook. She would serve. She would refill. She would check. She would go back to the kitchen for the thing she forgot.
And by the time she finally sat — her food was cold.
Every time.

We didn't understand it then. We were children. We just ate.

But I think about that table now. The one we grew up at. Nothing like this. Plastic chairs. A tablecloth she washed every Sunday. The way the light came through the window at a certain angle — exactly like this — and made everything feel like it would last forever.

It didn't last forever.
They never do.

But what stayed — what I carry in my body and not just my head — is the feeling of being at that table.
Of being expected there. Of someone making sure there was a plate in front of me before they thought about themselves.

That is what a dining table actually is.
Not furniture.
A place where someone decides you are worth feeding.
Worth facing.
Worth showing up for.
Every day.
