Sometimes we don’t need to know where the current is taking us. We simply need to allow ourselves to flow.

ÒMÍ.

Meaning water in Yoruba: source of life, cleansing, transformation and renewal. This piece was created during one of the most significant seasons of transition in my life. Through layered textures, movement and organic forms it captures what it feels like to emerge from water refreshed. Lighter. Softer. Ready to begin again.

I am a self-taught Nigerian fibre artist. I started with curiosity and my hands and built everything from there. ÒMÍ was the piece where I first understood what I was actually making and why it mattered.

It is an honour to present this work as part of IRIRI ART GALLERY’s Living Art Exhibition at Taurean Max Headquarters, Anthony Village, Lagos.

Sometimes, we get so lost in the creative process that we forget to capture the moment.

I started this piece with so much excitement. I had the vision, the energy, the camera ready… I was going to document every step.

And then somewhere in the process, I lost the ginger. 😂

I got tired. I stopped filming. I deleted some of the footage. And by the time I remembered I was supposed to be creating content, I was already at the finish line, desperately searching for clips of the process.

But maybe that’s okay too.

Because not every beautiful thing needs to be perfectly documented while it is becoming.

Sometimes, you just have to be present enough to make it.

And maybe that’s the reminder:
You don’t always have to capture the becoming. Sometimes, it’s enough to simply become.

Let me tell you a story about this skirt order I got while I was vacationing in the USA 🥹

That’s her. Warm, soft, effortlessly feminine, and one of the most genuinely supportive women I’ve had the joy of making something for.

She shows up for people. Quietly, consistently, without being asked. Patronising businesses in our community, dropping encouraging comments, bringing beautiful energy into every space she enters. She is exactly the kind of woman this community was built for 🤍
