I love the front view of this house!!!

That's exactly what an **architectural elevation** is.

An elevation is a drawing that shows what a building looks like from the outside. It gives you a clear picture of the front, back, and side views before construction even begins.

But an elevation is much more than a beautiful picture.

It shows:
๐Ÿ  The overall appearance of the building.
๐ŸชŸ The size and position of doors and windows.
๐Ÿ“ Floor levels and building height.
๐Ÿ›๏ธ Roof shape and design.
๐ŸŽจ Exterior finishes and materials.
๐Ÿ’ก Architectural features like columns, balconies, canopies, and decorative details.

An elevation helps clients see what their finished building will look like and helps builders construct it exactly as designed.

Without proper elevation drawings, it's easy to end up with misplaced windows, uneven heights, or a building that looks completely different from what you imagined.

Remember, a floor plan tells you **how the spaces are arranged**, while an elevation shows **how your building will look from the outside.** Both are equally important.

A section in an architects drawing is a drawing that shows what the building looks like if it were sliced through from top to bottom. It helps everyone understand what's happening inside the buildingโ€”things you can't see on a floor plan.

A section shows:
๐Ÿ“ Floor-to-ceiling heights.
๐Ÿชœ Staircase details and levels.
๐Ÿ  Roof structure and ceiling heights.
๐Ÿšช Door and window heights.
๐Ÿงฑ Foundation and floor levels.
๐Ÿ—๏ธ Structural elements like beams and slabs.
๐Ÿ“ The relationship between different spaces in the building.

Without a section drawing, builders may guess dimensions, leading to costly mistakes during construction.

That's why a complete building plan isn't just about the floor plan or the beautiful 3D design. Every drawing has a purpose, and the section is one of the most important.

Before today, did you know that architects "cut" buildings on paper to show what's inside? Or is this your first time hearing about section drawings?

๐Ÿ  Why is my house hot, even when the weather isn't that bad?

Many houses become unbearably hot because of simple design mistakes like poor ventilation, the wrong building direction, too few windows, unsuitable roofing materials, or little shade around the building.

Itโ€™s not always because of the Nigerian sun. Sometimes, the problem is the way the house was designed.

A well-designed home should include:

โ˜€๏ธ Proper building orientation
๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Adequate cross ventilation
๐Ÿ—๏ธ High-quality roofing materials
๐ŸชŸ Adequate and properly placed windows
๐ŸŒณ Use of shading devices

Good design should give you comfort, not just a beautiful building.

Have you ever heard someone say, "The drawing wasn't clear?

That's exactly why **Detail Sheets** are included in architectural drawings.

A **detail sheet** is where architects zoom in on important parts of a building to show exactly how they should be constructed. It removes guesswork and helps ensure every detail is built correctly.

A detail sheet can show:
๐Ÿงฑ Wall-to-floor and wall-to-roof connections.
๐Ÿšช Door and window installation details.
๐Ÿชœ Staircase construction details.
๐Ÿ  Roof edges, gutters, and fascia details.
๐ŸชŸ Window sills and lintels.
๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Floor finishes and expansion joints.
๐Ÿ’ง Waterproofing and drainage details.
๐Ÿ“ Construction dimensions, materials, and fixing methods.

These drawings are produced at a larger scale so builders can clearly see every connection, measurement, and construction method.

Without detail sheets, contractors may interpret the drawings differently, leading to poor workmanship, water leakage, cracks, finishing problems, and costly corrections.

Think of it this way: **The floor plan shows where things go, the elevation shows how the building looks, the section shows what's inside, and the detail sheet explains exactly how each part should be built.**

**Let's hear from you.๐Ÿ‘‡**

One of the biggest mistakes people make is choosing a roof simply because they saw it on another building.

A **roof plan** is more than the shape you see from the outside. It shows how the roof is designed to protect your home, drain rainwater properly, provide ventilation, and complement the overall building design.

There are different **roof types**, including:
๐Ÿ”น Hip Roof
๐Ÿ”น Gable Roof
๐Ÿ”น Flat Roof
๐Ÿ”น Shed Roof
๐Ÿ”น Butterfly Roof
๐Ÿ”น Combination Roof

So, what determines the right roof type?

โœ”๏ธ Your budget.
โœ”๏ธ The architectural style of the house.
โœ”๏ธ The size and layout of the building.
โœ”๏ธ Nigeria's climate and rainfall.
โœ”๏ธ Wind direction in your location.
โœ”๏ธ Roofing materials available.
โœ”๏ธ Future maintenance requirements.

A roof should never be chosen based on appearance alone. The right roof improves drainage, reduces heat, lasts longer, and adds value to your property.

Before a single block is laid, it all starts with a floor plan.

Many people focus on how a house will look from the outside, but the real comfort is on the inside.

A good **floor plan** determines how you move around your home, where each room is located, how natural light enters, how air flows, and how well your family uses the space every day.

A poorly planned floor plan can leave you with narrow passages, wasted space, dark rooms, poor ventilation, and a home that doesn't fit your lifestyle.

That's why your floor plan should be designed around **your needs**, not copied from someone else's building.

Whether you're building a bungalow, duplex, apartments, or a commercial property, getting the floor plan right from the beginning can save you money, time, and future regrets.

Have you ever wondered how builders know the exact size of every door and window in a house?

The answer is simple: **Schedules**.

In architectural drawings, a **schedule** is a table that provides detailed information about different building elements. It removes guesswork and ensures everyone on site is working with the right specifications.

A schedule can show:
๐Ÿšช Door sizes, types, and materials.
๐ŸชŸ Window sizes, styles, and opening directions.
๐Ÿช‘ Room finishes such as floor, wall, and ceiling materials.
๐Ÿšฝ Fixtures and fittings for kitchens, bathrooms, and toilets.
๐Ÿ”‘ Ironmongery like locks, hinges, and handles.
๐ŸŽจ Finishes, quantities, and other important construction details.

Instead of filling the drawing with too much information, architects organise these details into schedules so builders, suppliers, and clients can easily understand what is required.

Without schedules, the wrong doors, windows, or finishes could be ordered, leading to delays, extra costs, and unnecessary mistakes on site.

A complete architectural drawing is more than just plans and elevations. The schedules provide the fine details that help bring the design to life.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ Can't my engineer handle everything on a building project?

It's a question many people ask, but the truth is that every successful building is the result of a team of professionals working together.

Here's why each one matters:

๐Ÿ“ **The Architect** designs the building, plans the spaces, and ensures the project is functional, beautiful, and suitable for your needs.

๐Ÿงฑ **The Structural Engineer** makes sure the building is strong, stable, and safe to withstand the loads it will carry.

โšก **The Electrical Engineer** designs safe and efficient electrical systems for lighting, sockets, security, and power distribution.

๐Ÿšฐ **The Mechanical Engineer** handles plumbing, drainage, water supply, air conditioning, and fire protection systems.

๐Ÿ“ **The Quantity Surveyor** helps you manage costs, prepare budgets, and prevent unnecessary spending.

๐Ÿ‘ท **The Builder** plans and supervises construction to ensure the work is carried out correctly, safely, and according to the approved drawings.

๐ŸŒ **The Land Surveyor** accurately measures the land, confirms boundaries, and prevents costly disputes or building in the wrong location.

When one professional is ignored or asked to do another person's job, the result can be poor workmanship, structural defects, delays, budget overruns, failed approvals, or expensive repairs in the future.

A building is like a football team. Every player has a position, and the team performs best when everyone plays their role.

**Let's hear from you.๐Ÿ‘‡**

**If you were building your dream home, would you hire the right professionals from the beginning or try to save money by skipping some of them? Why?**

Why do I have cracks in my POP ceiling?

At first, it may look like a small line, but over time, those cracks can spread and spoil the beauty of your home.

So, why does a POP ceiling crack?

Some of the most common causes include:
๐Ÿ”น Building movement or settlement.
๐Ÿ”น Poor workmanship during installation.
๐Ÿ”น Roof leaks that allow water to soak the ceiling.
๐Ÿ”น Low-quality POP materials.
๐Ÿ”น Cracks in the roof slab or ceiling structure.
๐Ÿ”น Lack of proper expansion joints in large ceiling areas.

Many people simply repaint the ceiling, but if the real cause isn't fixed, the cracks will keep coming back.

The best solution is to identify the source of the problem first, repair it properly, and then restore the POP finish. This saves you money and prevents repeated repairs.

**Let's hear from you.๐Ÿ‘‡**

Why do so many Nigerian houses leak during the rainy season? ๐ŸŒง๏ธ

Have you ever noticed water stains on your ceiling or walls after a heavy rain? That small leak you ignore today can become a big and expensive problem tomorrow.

Most leaks happen because of poor roof installation, damaged roofing sheets, blocked gutters, cracked walls, poor waterproofing, or weak drainage around the building.

When moisture stays in your walls for too long, **mould** begins to grow. Besides making your home look untidy, mould can cause unpleasant odours, damage your paint, and affect indoor air quality.

**Here's how to reduce the risk of mould in damp walls:**
โœ”๏ธ Fix roof and plumbing leaks as soon as you notice them.
โœ”๏ธ Repair cracks before the rainy season.
โœ”๏ธ Improve ventilation by opening windows or using extractor fans where necessary.
โœ”๏ธ Keep gutters and drainage channels free of debris.
โœ”๏ธ Allow damp walls to dry completely before repainting.
โœ”๏ธ Use quality waterproofing materials during construction and renovation.

Remember, painting over a damp wall doesn't solve the problem. It only hides it for a short time.

**Let's hear from you.๐Ÿ‘‡**

**What's the biggest problem you've experienced during the rainy seasonโ€”roof leaks, damp walls, flooded compound, or cracked walls?**
