Another busy season at HomeCycle ☀️🏡

This time, we had the pleasure of welcoming a lovely family of five from the US to their beautiful new home in Haarlem, just outside Amsterdam.

When they signed the contract, the house was completely unfurnished and didn’t even have any lights! Fast-forward to one bright summer morning and they walked into a fully furnished, warm and welcoming home, with every bedroom ready and freshly made beds waiting for them after a long flight. ✈️🛏️

One of our favourite parts? Seeing the reaction of our US clients to the variety (and quality!) of IKEA in the Netherlands 🇳🇱. From fun pieces carefully chosen by our littlest clients weeks in advance to build the excitement, to IKEA team members becoming one of our most valuable behind-the-scenes partners.

✨ Imagine arriving in the Netherlands and your home is already completely set up.

No flat-pack furniture. No cardboard apocalypse. No frantic “Which aisle was the cutlery on again?” laps around IKEA. Just unpack your suitcase, pop the kettle on, and start your new adventure. 🇳🇱🏡

This recent project saw us helping a family of four relocate from the USA to their beautiful new home in Amstelveen.

While they were saying goodbye to one chapter, we were busy getting the next one ready.

Our team took care of:
✔️ Fully furnishing every bedroom
✔️ Equipping the kitchen with everything they needed
✔️ Styling the children’s rooms with thoughtful finishing touches
✔️ Accepting and securely storing deliveries before the family arrived
✔️ Coordinating TVs, appliances, vacuum cleaners and other essentials
✔️ Washing towels and bed linen ready for Day 1
✔️ Assembling furniture, an outdoor lounge set and even a trampoline
✔️ Recycling what felt like an entire truckload of cardboard (seriously... there was a lot 📦😂)

We love IKEA (and honestly, we’ve been really impressed with the quality they’ve been delivering lately!), but we also know that every family has their own style. So for this project, we worked with our clients’ favourite furniture brands too, making sure every piece felt just right.

Because relocating to a new country is enough of an adventure without spending your first weekend deciphering furniture instructions and wondering why you have three mystery screws left over. 🔩😂

🏡✨ From empty house to family home in just a few weeks!

We had so much fun putting together this beautiful home in Leiden for a lovely family relocating from the US with their three young children 🪴

This project combined our Personalised Sourcing Package with our Curated Second-Hand Package, meaning we sourced a mix of carefully selected new pieces from multiple retailers alongside quality second-hand finds to create a home that felt personal, practical and ready for family life from the moment they arrived in the Netherlands.

Their new home in The Hague was mostly furnished, but this was the one thing missing from their life in the U.S., so we topped up their space by turning an unused corner into a simple, cosy reading nook that makes the home feel more like theirs.

✨ Behind the Scenes: A HomeCycle Day 1 Expat Arrival Package 🪴

As HomeCycle kicks off another busy summer season welcoming new families to the Netherlands, we thought we’d take you behind the scenes of one of our recent projects in Leiden.

This reel shows the journey from the moment we receive the keys to an empty rental, through the mountain of flat-packed furniture deliveries, to the final move-in-ready home after days of hard work from our dedicated assembly team.

What you don’t see on camera is often where the real work happens:

📞 The endless calls to suppliers about delayed deliveries
🚗 The cross-countey trips to collect missing wardrobe doors
🛏️ Making sure every pillow has its matching pillowcase
🧸 And the occasional team debate over IKEA children’s toys, which somehow manage to be more confusing than an entire dining set

But that’s exactly why HomeCycle exists.

We know that when you’re arranging visas, packing up your life, relocating your children, moving your pets and flying halfway across the world, the last thing you should be worrying about is whether your bed frame arrived with all its screws.

Things go wrong. Deliveries are delayed. Parts go missing. That’s simply part of furnishing homes at scale. Our job is to build enough buffer into the process to solve those problems before they become your problems.

A new city, a new home and a fresh start in the heart of Amsterdam 🪴

This project began with a semi-furnished apartment and a client who had a very clear vision for how she wanted her new home to feel. She was open to mixing secondhand pieces with newly sourced items where it made sense which allowed us to create a space that felt both intentional and personal from the very beginning.

One of the first pieces we found was a beautiful leather couch on the secondhand market, almost identical to the family’s couch back in the US. The moment it arrived the apartment immediately started feeling a little more familiar and a little more like home.

We also wanted to make sure Amsterdam’s littlest new expat felt settled too 🧸 Their familiar play kitchen and dining setup were ready and waiting so that, even in the middle of a huge international move, playtime and little routines could continue uninterrupted.

A real highlight of this project was the secondhand Murphy bed we installed in the office space, creating a comfortable guest setup without taking away valuable Amsterdam living space. Practical, functional and the perfect fit for this home 🍃

Over the course of the project, we worked closely with our client to coordinate deliveries, source pieces thoughtfully and set up favourite appliances and homeware so that everything was ready from the moment the family walked through the door.

Projects like this are exactly why we love what we do, helping people land softly in a brand new city and making an unfamiliar place feel like home from day one 🪴🇳🇱

Arriving in a new country and going straight into work is a lot, so this is where our Day 1 Arrival Package comes in 🍃

It’s designed for clients who already know what they want in their home, but don’t have the time (or headspace) to coordinate it all. We take care of the logistics in advance so everything is ready from the moment they arrive.

For a recent move to Utrecht, that meant setting up a fully functional home office, stocking the kitchen with essentials, putting cleaning and pet supplies in place and assembling the beds and adding fresh linen and towels.

Nothing left to organise, nothing left to figure out. Just a home that’s ready to live and work in from day one 🪴

Final moments before our client arrived from the US 🪴✨

With early access to the property, clear communication on style and preferences and a shared openness to the secondhand market, we were able to transform an empty space into a fully furnished, thoughtfully curated home ready from day one using only secondhand furniture.

No mattresses on the floor. No takeaway boxes as makeshift tables. Just a comfortable space to land in a brand new country 🪴 🇳🇱

This project came with its fair share of challenges (late nights, surprise electrical issues, and a couch that absolutely refused to go up the stairs… until it went through the window), but it also reminded us why we love what we do. There’s something incredibly rewarding about piecing together a home sustainably, creatively and with intention 🪴

Walking through the door to see our client’s reaction made every moment worth it 🍃
