The first time I touched the clay was in 2011. It was an instant connection, and I fell head over heels in love. I love to blend different techniques: wheel throwing and hand-building, smooth and texture, shiny and matte surfaces. My passion lies in observing nature, drawing inspiration from it, and crafting unique ceramic vases and interior decor items. Each piece is slowly handmade, embodying the uniqueness and irreplaceability of the natural world. I’ve officially gone mad. I’m talking to my ceramic pieces now.

— Hi, Narcissus. How are you?
— Not bad. Just wondering who I am and why I exist.
— Well, I made you, so maybe you should be asking me.

— Why did you make me?
— Honestly? I don’t know. I took 3 kg of clay and things just… happened.
— That’s not a very satisfying answer.
— I know. First you were a kind of chaga-like form on the wheel. Then I started cutting into you. And somewhere along the way you turned into a flower.
— So I was created by accident?
— No, no. We call it intuition.
— Sounds much more intentional.

A little backstory to the project “Transformation” I wrote about a few days ago.

I mentioned my unfinished project with living plants and ceramics, and all the experiments I’ve been doing with it. But I never told you where the idea actually came from.

It started with a book.

I was reading Not Alone at Home about the microbiome that lives with us in our homes. I was fascinated by the idea that the microorganisms around us are not necessarily something we should constantly try to eliminate. That our obsession with sterility can actually work against us, and that cooperation might sometimes be more useful than fighting everything we consider “unclean”.

The idea stayed with me.

And at some point I started thinking about plants. Every plant has its own community of microorganisms living around it. So I started thinking about bringing living plants into my ceramic forms and seeing what could happen.

That was where the first ideas for this project came from.

Two years later, I’m still experimenting with plants, ceramics and different ways they could coexist. I still haven’t found the right solution, but now you know where the whole thing started. GET ART FIT | кузница талантов

I was recently cleaning out my studio and mentally asking each object I found: how long have you been here and why?

I found some non-obvious items:
1. A coffee temper measuring spoon.
One of the first tools I brought into my studio. Its flat, round part turned out to be perfect for supporting the inside of a piece while I stamped the bottom.

2. A stone that’s been sitting in my studio for about three years.
I don’t even remember where I found it. It’s quite heavy, and I sometimes press it into the clay to see what texture it leaves.

3. An old Moscow Troika transit card.
I use it as a rib to smooth the surface when I turn the wheel.

None of these things were intended for ceramics. I just found a use for them. Well, except for the stone. I decided to keep that one anyway; it’s like a talisman. Someday I will definitely find a use for it. GET ART FIT | кузница талантов

I keep thinking about attention.

Our attention is limited. We can spend it on one thing, stay with it for a while, go deeper, look at it from different sides. Or we can spread it across dozens of things, giving each one just a small piece of our attention.

In that case, we only touch the surface. We move from one thing to another without having enough time to really go deeper.

And I’ve noticed that my own attention is becoming more and more fragmented.

I answer messages, work, make ceramics, read something, check something, solve another small problem, switch to something else. By the evening, I sometimes struggle to remember what I actually did that day. There was always something happening, but at the same time it feels like I didn’t really do anything. I touched a lot of things, but didn’t have enough time or attention to really be present in any of them.

The strange thing is that when I talk to people around me, I hear something very similar.

It feels like our lives are getting faster, while our attention is being divided into smaller and smaller pieces.

And I’m not sure this is where we wanted to end up. GET ART FIT | кузница талантов

A project I’ve never really written about.

There have been little mentions and references to it here and there, but I’ve never actually told the whole story, from beginning to where the project is now.

It started during my residency at GetArtFit GET ART FIT | кузница талантов in 2024, but I never finished it. And actually, it is still not finished. It is still somewhere between searching, experimenting and trying to find the right solution.

The original idea was to create a work that would change and transform over time, almost like a living organism.

Since then, I haven’t been able to let go of the idea of combining living plants with ceramics. The ceramic part would be solid and almost unchanged over time, while the plants would be the living, constantly changing part.

So I started experimenting. Chia seeds, moss, aquarium plants… trying different ways of bringing something living into a ceramic form.

And it turned out to be much more complicated than I expected. Fast-growing plants grow quickly, but they also die quickly. Slower and more resilient ones, like moss, need a lot of time. And ceramics are not exactly the most suitable environment for plants either.

Two years later, I still haven’t found the right form or solution.

But the project is still here, and it still doesn’t let me go. So the research continues.

I spent ten years measuring time in human hours. A project manager in IT. Every minute was accounted for.

Then emigration. Then everything stopped. For the first time in years, I had nowhere to rush. I took out a sketchbook. I drew a flower growing along the road. I’d passed these flowers my whole life, but it was as if I’d never truly seen them.

Jenny Odell calls it «stepping off the assembly line.» I didn’t choose to step off. I was pushed.

That flower became a sculpture. Then another. Then 12. Now I’m working on 30. Not because 30 is a round number, but because 30 flowers in a room change the atmosphere of that room. And I want to see what happens when people walk through them.
