I was an architect. I was good at it, and I was almost completely burnt out.
So I picked up drawing again, and found out something funny. I could draw a perfect straight line. I could not draw a single thing I actually saw. My first drawing was a tree and it was not good.
So I made it smaller. One subject. Leaves.
I spent the whole of 2020 on that, the year our first baby arrived. Markers, pencils, ink pens, trying everything. Then I bought watercolors and just swatched them, and the way the colours bled into each other, I still think it is magic.
Still leaves, until I found it. Ink lines and watercolor.
The thing I was missing was accountability. I wanted every line perfect, and perfect is a very good reason never to begin.
Now I am the opposite. Not because I got good. Because I started doing it for fun. It is not the finished page that makes me happy any more, it is the hour.
And when I started teaching, I heard the same three sentences every time. I donât have time. I donât know what to draw. I donât know where to start. And then we just donât start.
So I built the answer to all three.
