The Four-Armed Mahakala (Chaturbhuja Mahakala or Gonpo Chagshi) is a prominent wrathful Dharmapala (Dharma protector) in Vajrayana Buddhism, specifically in the Kagyu and Nyingma traditions. He is a manifestation of compassion and wisdom, protecting practitioners from obstacles and subduing negative forces on the path to enlightenment.
Symbolism and Imagery
Four Arms: Represent the four karmas (actions) of a protector: calming, enriching, magnetizing, and destroying.
Weapons: Typically holds a hook knife (kartika), a skull cup (kapala) with nectar, a sword, and a trident.
Appearance: Deep blue or black, surrounded by a blazing halo of wisdom fire, and often crushing a corpse/demon, symbolizing the destruction of ego.
Role: He is considered the main protector of the Marpa Kagyu lineage and the Chakrasamvara Ta**ra.
Common Forms and Practice
Singular or Consort: He may appear in a solitary form or in union with his consort, Chandika.
Mantra: His mantra is often cited as "OM BENZA MAHAKALA HUNG PHAT", used to invoke his protective blessings.
