THE RED THREAD — SOME STORIES WAIT YEARS TO FIND THEIR FORM.
Carved in 50,000 years old ancient swamp kauri, in these pieces The Red Thread brings together land, memory and a story Lyzadie Lyzadie Renault has carried since she was 15 years old.
The flowing pattern is inspired by the pou at Kaingamatura, near Huia. It acknowledges the history and whakapapa of mana whenua, Te Kawerau ā Maki, and the traditional Māori story of two lovers who hid together behind the powerful waters of a roaring waterfall.
When Lyzadie was 15, she spent a week staying at Hoani Waititi Marae. There, under the guidance of renowned Māori artist and educator Arnold Manaaki Wilson, she helped carve a mural telling this same story. To present their work, the students also acted out the story, bringing its people, emotion and meaning to life.
That beautiful experience stayed with her for all these years.
Now, the story has returned through design.
The curved layers of swamp kauri represent the waterfall, while the fine threads flow across the wood like the exposed roots of the pōhutukawa tree, holding, protecting and connecting.
Together, they tell a story about love, courage and the unseen and unbreakable threads that connect people across time and space.
This is more than furniture. It is a memory carried forward, a detail of nature, a story treated with respect, and a piece of design created with soul.
