About 9 years ago, I made this harekeke dreamcatcher with paua shell and feathers for a wee bit of fun. It's still hanging on the wall today and is a great reminder of how far I've come working with different fibres

I have high standards when it comes to my mahi, so it doesn't surprise me that I went and changed the overall aesthetic. From start to finish, the quality of my work must remain the same, no shortcuts, nor do I rush. I create with intention not only for myself but for the receiver, I really wouldn't have it any other way.

Love the new vibe. I hope you do too because it's here to stay ❤️

Tell me if I'm wrong. Recently, I shared my framed hei kakī with you, but every day since I've been looking at it with this feeling that something wasn't quite right. It needed more depth, contrast, and texture. I'm usually a 'less is more' kinda gal with my work, but the original framed piece was feeling very generic with all the white taking away from the art itself I knew something needed to be changed...I've been drawn to this piece, it's been asking for more so I did just that.

Removing the matboard and then adding a two layer fabric background made all the difference. Calico cotton at the back and linen front and centre, such a simple change but one that has given the weaving all the attention it deserves.

I'm satisfied, content with how she finally looks. My mind can rest 😌, in the end, I found the vibe I was aiming for, and that alone is the best feeling as an artist.

If you've made it to the end, thank you for staying ❤️ feel free to let me know your thoughts on the changes I made.

You won't know until you give it a good go. If one way of learning doesn't work for you, then try another. For me, I'm a visual learner, an area where I excel and use to my advantage. If Im reading instructions I may have to read it 20 times over before I can begin to grasp the technique Im trying to learn. But, show me that same technique physically in video or in person, and I will know exactly what to do within seconds. Perhaps on a rough day, it may take up to a minute. But, the point here is that we can all learn. We just need to find the best way forward.

Do not ever think you can't do something because you're not arty, learn the basic skills, then build up from there. As long as you're finding happiness in whatever it is you're trying to learn, then that to me is all that matters.

With so many resources readily available, it does make learning much easier, free, or paid community classes in person, online, or in books. Find what works for you, and don't give up too soon.

Harekeke leaves and tī kōuka leaves, both of them have such beautiful colours, when woven together, they just flow with ease. This lot was woven around a hue (gourd), using simple twining techniques that created a rustic finish.
