Coffee table project finally complete. This was wood I bought in November 2023 from a sale of the old Governors Bay jetty scraps here in Christchurch. Originally I was going to build a dining table, but in the end went for a smaller more manageable coffee table. And I am so happy with how it turned out!
The wood was tough!!! Probably from years of weathering in the harbour, so I had to use a blade normally used for cutting metal to cut through it! The next hardest part of the whole project was making the table stable using an electric planer, a sander, and resorting back to the saw at times…this took hours because the wood had so much character (buckled/warped), so no amount of measuring helped…and in fact made it worse.
So in the end it just took some instinct and guess work to eye up the balance. It sits perfectly flat now.
I used some Resene white wash and Mitre 10 furniture feet pads to finish the whole thing off.
