Re:threading Memory
Repurposed and dyed domestic Fabrics
$250

About the artist and work:
Re:threading memory is part of an ongoing series that
reconnects with female ancestors through stitch. Working with repurposed domestic
fabrics, naturally dyed and eco-printed, the piece brings past and present into dialogue through slow, repetitive making. Remembering occurs through fragments — lived memory, archival research, and imagined lives — allowing absence, invention, and care to sit alongside one another. Nicki Williams is a multidisciplinary artist based in Ōtautahi Christchurch, increasingly working with textile-based practices alongside abstract mixed-media painting. Her work explores connection, memory, and lineage, often engaging with landscape, materiality, and slow, hand-based processes. With a
background in landscape architecture, she is drawn to feminist and inclusive ways of
thinking about space, inheritance, and the unseen.

I’ve spent the last week at Torrent Bay in Abel Tasman national park, an idyllic place I’ve been going to since I was a child (that’s me in the last photo). I was inspired to create these items from the scenery, memories, and natural objects around me. Found shells, feathers, seed pods and dried flax as thread for stitching and weaving.
