But when it comes to bedding you'll sleep in every night, the most important question is often much simpler: How do you want it to feel?

For us, great linen should feel breathable in summer, comfortable in winter, soft against your skin, and inviting at the end of a long day.

That's why we focus on quality flax fibres, thoughtful craftsmanship, and a fabric weight that balances comfort and breathability throughout the year.

If you've ever wondered what GSM actually means, or whether a higher GSM is always better, we've put together a straightforward guide to help you make sense of it.

Do you iron your linen bedding? It's one of the questions we're asked most often.

The good news is that linen doesn't need to be perfectly pressed to look beautiful. In fact, the soft texture and gentle creases that develop over time are part of what many people love most about flax linen.

If you prefer a smoother finish, linen can be ironed while slightly damp. But if you'd rather skip the ironing board altogether, you're in good company.

Linen is designed for real life; comfortable, relaxed, and easy to enjoy every day.

What does GSM actually mean in linen bedding?

If you've been researching linen bedding, you've probably come across the term GSM. It's often used as a selling point, but what does it actually tell you?

GSM stands for grams per square metre and simply refers to the weight of the fabric.

A common misconception is that a higher GSM automatically means better quality. In reality, GSM only tells part of the story. The quality of the flax fibres, the finishing process, and how the linen feels in everyday use are just as important.

At Aspen & Fern, our flax linen bedding is crafted from fabric weighing approximately 165–175 GSM. We chose this weight because it offers a balance of breathability, softness, and comfort throughout the year, substantial enough to feel cosy, while still maintaining the airy qualities linen is loved for.

If you've ever wondered whether GSM matters when choosing linen bedding, we've put together a simple guide explaining what it means and what to look for.

🌿 World Environment Day

Have you ever seen a flax flower? These delicate blue flowers are where linen begins.

Long before it becomes bedding, table linen, or the pieces we use every day, linen starts as a natural fibre grown from the flax plant.

One of the things we love most about linen is that it's made to be enjoyed for years. It softens with use, becomes more comfortable over time, and is a fabric many people treasure for its longevity.

Today we're celebrating the connection between nature and home, and the beauty of choosing pieces designed to be loved for years to come. 🤍

Can you put linen in the dryer? The short answer is yes but with a little care.

When it comes to caring for flax linen, our preferred approach is to air dry first whenever possible. Air drying helps preserve linen's natural texture and relaxed character, while a short tumble dry on low heat can soften the fabric and reduce stiffness after washing.

In our latest blog, we're sharing practical tips on:
• Drying linen safely
• Minimising shrinkage
• Keeping linen soft and comfortable
• When to choose air drying over the dryer

Whether you're caring for linen sheets, duvet covers, pillowcases, or tea towels, a few simple habits can help your linen look and feel its best.

One question for fellow linen lovers: Do you mostly air dry, use the dryer, or a combination of both?

A lot of people tell me they like the idea of patterned bedding, but worry it might feel too busy once it’s in the room. And honestly, that’s a fair concern.

What tends to work best is starting with something soft and tonal, so it adds a bit of depth without taking over the space. It ends up feeling more like texture than a strong pattern, which makes it much easier to live with and style.
