It's Titirangi Village Market this Sunday!

It's such a joy to spend time at this market and support Titirangi Rudolf Steiner School. Together with the stall holders and live music we create a restful, family friendly and nourishing rich food experiences for the community.

I love to see what catches the children's eyes, the conversations they have with the stall holders and the sensory experience of the live music.

If you're looking for a family fun time and a snack come and see us at our sausage sizzle!

With thanks to our supplier Neat Meat ⭐️

In Waldorf Art we continue to explore colour and imagination’s through the class 5 curriculum ~ Ancient Greece.

The following phrase is found on the temple at Dephi. The full phrase says, “O Man (anthropos) know thyself and thou shalt know the world; O Man know the world and thou shalt know thyself.” One can see in this phrase the sense that the human being is the world writ small and that the world is the human being writ large. It is the mirroring of microcosmos and macrocosmos and lends a deeper layer of meaning to the words of Genesis that describes the human being as made in the image of God.

Happy Michaelmas!

In Waldorf schools, Michaelmas, or the Festival of Courage, is one of the festival’s that are celebrated in the school year. Traditionally, children perform the play of St. George taming a fiery dragon with the help of the archangel, St. Michael, who gives courage. ✨

Firmly on the earth I stand;
Michaëls sword within my hand;
• • •
When I conquer fear,
The dragon's chains I tightly bind;
Michaël's light within my mind;
• • •
When I thrust against the monster's pride,
Michaël is at my side.

~ Poem shared by Rudolf Steiner School in New York City 💛

Ancient Greece - class 5 is an inspiring main lesson and the children recently performed the play 'In the Labyrinth' each student playing multiple parts.

The class play is a wonderful Waldorf School tradition that brings the entire community together.

The play allows the teacher to build the social strength of the class and reinforces several aspects of the curriculum. Preparing for the play changes the routine in a stimulating and artistic way that is a welcome break from the usual rhythm of the of the school year. Many artistic projects can be a part of preparations for the plays, such as creating paper maché masks and props, learning musical instrument pieces, voice and dance opportunities, set design, as well as sewing and fabric arts.

The play helps the class teacher to develop the skills and capacity of the students, and strengthens a sense of interdependence in the whole class while introducing a new form of the creativity, the dramatic arts.

Teachers decide on the play and the cast. Often an unlikely candidate is chosen for a lead part and an obvious leader is chosen for a small part, which can surprise everyone. This can become an important way to shift class dynamics and stretch individual children’s abilities. The results stretch the child’s abilities and add to the artistic experience and sensibilities of the young artist.

An effective pedagogical play is not judged by the same criteria as a mainstream production. The intention is beyond entertainment for an audience or for parents. Children learn to depend on each other in new ways and to discover their ability to take on different characters after deeply entering into a new stage persona. Students find new voices for themselves, new motivations, new friends, and a new appreciation for each other through their interactions on stage.

Love how this Waldorf school supports and teachers social emotional skills to its students 💜 🌏 ✨

It is MONDAY!! We all have strong feelings at the start of the week!

Did you know.. here at Seaside Charter Schools we acknowledge that there are big feelings EVERY day! To us, teaching children social emotional skills is just as important as academics. Research shows that in order for a child to successfully solve problems or learn, they must be out of their survival or emotional state and in their executive state.

Our staff are continuously being trained in Conscious Discipline and each of our campuses has a Dean of Students with Conscious Discipline experience. To support our children's emotional intelligence, we also incorporate self-awareness, self-regulation, responsible decision-making, social awareness, and relationship skills in our curriculum and daily rhythm.

The desire to take education outside is a key principle in Waldorf schools.

Such an approach allows students to connect with nature and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them. It plays a crucial role in helping children develop a sense of wonder, curiosity, as well as responsibility and stewardship for the natural world.

In addition Steiner believed through encouraging children to spend as much time as possible in nature, it has a calming and rejuvenating effect on the mind and body.

'Nature is the best teacher, and it can help the child to find inner peace and balance.'

-R. Steiner

In learning through doing the will forces are strengthened in Waldorf education.

Woodworking begins with the emphasis on the qualities of wood and how to use the tools that shape it. Students develop a feel for their material by rasping and sanding and using different tools. They then move on to concave shapes, like spoons, which involves digging into the wood. Woodworking helps develop focus, creativity, perseverance, and skillfulness of eye and hand. Throughout, the teacher attempts to awaken an appreciation for the combination of usefulness and beauty.

Rudolf Steiner felt that it was equally important for students to work with their hands as it was to work with their minds.

'Children who learn while they are young to make practical things by hand in an artistic way, and for the benefit of others as well as for themselves, will not be strangers to life or to other people when they are older. They will be able to form their lives and their relationships in a social and artistic way, so that their lives are thereby enriched. Out of their hands can come technicians and artists who will know how to solve the problems and tasks set for us.'

- Rudolf Steiner
