The work that you will see tomorrow at The Arts House Trust is part of my ongoing attempt to reclaim a process I deeply value from the product-driven systems (read the capitalist machine) that are easy and safe for me to to fall into.

The process I use to make these works (and my functional ware) is embedded with my personal narrative, where colour acts as a language for the emotions I cannot easily articulate or explain but desperately need to be expressed so they aren't stuck within me

I hope you'll join me for the opening of RE:TALE on Friday 12th June at 5:30pm at The Arts House Trust.

If you'd like to hear more about the work, come along to the artist talk at 4:30pm.

I am always drawn back to my nerikomi process to the point that my wheel is now packed away and the only tools I have out are the ones I use for nerikomi. Quite simply, I don't want to do any other kind of clay work.

The reason is simple.

Nerikomi gives me the perfect balance between control and serendipity.

I might begin with a clear idea of what I want a piece to look like, or a pattern in mind (perhaps checkers). But when constructing, slicing, and rolling the block, a whole range of factors come into play: the softness of the clay, the way I handle the block, the pressure of the slab roller, and sometimes what feels like the universe stepping in. The pattern always shifts, stretches, or warps in some unexpected way.

Some might see that as a lack of mastery over the process, but I prefer to think of it as the clay having agency and having a say in how the pattern and piece emerges.

There are beautiful discoveries within these pieces that I could never fully plan or control. That constant push and pull between intention and surprise is the sweet spot for me. It's what keeps me coming back to nerikomi, making sometimes the same pattern over and over and over again.

Things I am obsessed with:

-Vibrant colours
-Patterns (ideally on ceramic vessels)
-Repetition
-Repetition
-Art galleries (like ones that have shows called RE:TALE)
-Interesting conversations (like artist talks)
-Orange and almond cake

So if you like any of those things see you at The Arts House Trust on Friday!

It's always a bit frantic in the lead-up to a big project.

This week I discovered another thing I'm terrible at which is putting up shelves (straight, I am good at putting them up wonky).

Outside of ceramics, I have a shocking eye for detail. Thankfully, I'll have help installing the shelves for RE:TALE at The Arts House Trust, because I probably shouldn't be trusted with a level and a drill.

I hope you'll join me for the opening of RE:TALE on Friday 12th June at 5:30pm.

If you'd like to hear more about the work, come along to the artist talk at 4:30pm.

See you there!

What will you be doing this time next Friday?

I really hope the answer is ... hanging out with me at The Arts House Trust for the opening of RE:TALE, an exhibition with myself and seven other incredible object makers.

This work you see in my hands might be involved… but I can neither confirm nor deny at this stage.

Its been both a pleasure and incredibly painful to make this work for this incredible exhibition.
It has pushed me out of my comfort zone (and I hate that!) but working with The Object Makers has been a privilege.

I am so excited to show you my work for RE:TALE at The Arts House Trust with the incredible makers Juliana Durán, Mel Ford, Eva Kerer, Bebay Millán, Birgit Moffatt, Samuel Montgomery, and Sarah Ziessen.

Come to the opening 12th of June at 5 30 pm at The Arts House Trust, I'd love to see you there

What an absolutely wonderful day at The Rotoorangi Pottery Extravaganza.
The demos were incredible, the raku kiln was hot, the pots looked fanatic and the buzz was unreal.

Thank you to everyone who joined us. Look forward to doing it all again today!
