The Parable of the Persistent Widow
18 Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. 2 He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought. 3 And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.’
4 “For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think, 5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!’”
6 And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. 7 And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? 8 I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?”
REFLECTION:
This parable speaks to me deeply about the importance of persistence in prayer and staying strong in faith, especially when life feels overwhelming. The widow didn’t give up, even when the unjust judge kept turning her away. It reminds me that in my own life, when I’m praying and not seeing immediate answers, it’s easy to feel discouraged or wonder if God is even listening. But Jesus is gently encouraging me not to lose hope, even when the wait seems long and difficult.
God hears every prayer, even when it feels like I’m shouting into the silence. His response will come in His perfect timing, with justice and mercy, just like the widow eventually received justice. I’m learning through this parable that faith isn’t just about asking once—it’s about trusting enough to keep asking, keep believing, and not give up.
Jesus' question at the end, “Will He find faith on the earth?” really hits home. It makes me pause and reflect on my own faith. Do I truly trust God, even when the answers don’t come right away? Am I willing to persevere in prayer, believing that He is working behind the scenes, even if I can’t see it yet? This parable challenges me to dig deeper in my trust and faith, knowing that God is always faithful, even when life feels uncertain.
