The globe beneath his foot represents the world—earthly possessions, status, wealth, and the things that can easily hold us back. St. Francis chose to place these beneath him, letting go of worldly attachments so he could follow God more freely and completely.

The cross raised before him represents Christ and the Gospel—the true direction of his life. With his eyes lifted toward the Cross, he seems to be reaching for Christ, leaving the world behind and choosing Him above all.
