Coffee is almost always served with a small glass of water, and there are a few reasons for it:
*1. Cleanse your palate*
Water resets your taste buds. You take a sip of water before the coffee so you can taste all the coffee flavors without anything else in the way. Then after, it clears the bitterness.
*2. Hydration*
Coffee is a diuretic — it makes you p*e more. The water balances that out so you don’t get dehydrated, especially with strong espresso or Turkish coffee.
*3. Tradition + hospitality*
In lots of cultures like in the Middle East, Turkey, and Europe, serving water with coffee is a sign of respect. It basically means “stay as long as you like.” In the old days, if you drank the water first it meant you were hungry, if you drank coffee first it meant you were just there to talk.
*4. Rinse*
That little glass is also for rinsing your mouth or spoon between sips, especially in coffee ceremonies.
