Is Scientific Contemplation of the Quran Forbidden?

A Critical Analysis of Dr. Pervez Hoodbhoy’s Theory, Our "Scope of Work," and a Detailed Refutation of Secular Objections

Introduction: The Intellectual Invasion and Echoes of Western Philosophy
In the current era, a powerful narrative is being presented by secular and liberal circles in Pakistan, represented by prominent physicists like Dr. Pervez Hoodbhoy. In their books and speeches, their central stance is that the Quran is strictly a book of guidance and should be kept away from science. They argue that contemplating (Tadabbur) Quranic verses through a scientific lens is a futile and even harmful exercise.
It is important to understand that this position is not new. It is an echo of a well-known Western philosophical concept called "NOMA" (Non-Overlapping Magisteria) [1]. According to this theory, science and religion are two entirely separate domains that should never meet. While this theory might suit other religions, it contradicts the comprehensiveness of the Quran and its fundamental spirit, which invites humanity to reflect upon the universe.
Our project, "The Quranic Lens on Modern Science," provides an academic and research-based refutation of this imported intellectual fallacy.
1. The Dual Purposes of This Comparative Study
We do not conduct this comparative study of science and the Quran out of any sense of inferiority; rather, it serves two great purposes:
A) A "Test of Truth" for Non-Muslims and Skeptics
Today is an era of reason and empiricism. To those who do not accept the Quran as the Word of God and consider science the final authority, we present this reality:
"If you do not believe the Quran is a divine book, then test it against the very criteria of science you accept. If this had been the creation of a human mind in the desert 1,400 years ago, it would have been riddled with contradictions in the face of modern scientific discoveries. Yet, the miracle of the Quran is that the latest scientific facts confirm it rather than refute it."
B) For Muslims: Strengthening of Faith
The second purpose is to solidify the faith of Muslims. When a believer observes the signs of the universe through modern scientific tools (like the James Webb Telescope)—signs that the Quran mentioned centuries ago—their faith rises from a traditional level to the rank of "Faith of Certainty" (Iman bi-l-Yaqin).
2. The Quranic Command of Tadabbur and the Role of Science
The theory of intellectuals like Dr. Hoodbhoy, that the Quran and science are entirely separate spheres, goes against the explicit commands of the Holy Quran. Allah (SWT) repeatedly states:
"Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding." (Surah Ali 'Imran 3:190) [2]
In the modern age, the best way to observe these "signs" is through modern science. Science is the "microscope and telescope" through which we witness the power of Allah. To prevent the use of these tools is equivalent to preventing Tadabbur (contemplation).
3. A Critical Warning: The Limits of Correlation and the Risk of Distortion
While we walk this delicate path with passion, we maintain our composure. Our methodology is bound by clear limits:
The Quran is the Ruler, Science is the Subject: Our principle is that the Quran is an Absolute Truth, whereas scientific theories are subject to change. We do not subordinate the Quran to science; instead, we present "Established Facts" of science before the majesty of the Quran.
Avoiding Forced Interpretation: We are strictly against twisting Quranic verses to forcibly fit them into a scientific formula (which can be termed 'Scientific Distortion' or Tahreef).
4. Practical Evidence of Our Research Integrity (Our Track Record)
The objection of Dr. Hoodbhoy and other critics is valid regarding those who emotionally link fake scientific news to Islam. However, our track record proves that we have always taken a balanced and investigative stance. We do not exist merely to prove things through the Quran; we also refute lies and exaggerations.
As evidence, here are a few of our well-known investigations:
Refutation of Sahil Adeem’s Theories: When attempts were made to forcibly link science fiction, such as black holes and time travel, to the Quran and Hadith, we academically opposed it and clarified the facts.
Neil Armstrong and Jacques Cousteau: We refuted the popular fake news among Muslims claiming that moon-walker Neil Armstrong and oceanographer Jacques Cousteau had converted to Islam. Our research proved these claims to be false.
Misconceptions Regarding Makkah: We provided scientific refutations for several unscientific claims regarding Makkah and the Kaaba (such as the supposed absence of gravity there).
These examples prove that we do not believe in "forced correlation"; our only goal is to reach the truth.
5. Detailed Response to Secular Objections
Here, we provide a detailed response to two major taunts often thrown at Muslims by secular and atheist circles:
Objection 1: "If everything was in the Quran, why don't Muslims research it themselves? Why do you boast about Western research?"
Answer: This objection is based on ignorance of historical facts and prejudice.
Historical Reality (The Golden Age): It is an undeniable fact that while Europe was plunged into the Dark Ages, Baghdad, Cordoba, and Cairo were the centers of science. Hundreds of Muslim scientists like Ibn al-Haytham (founder of optics), Jabir ibn Hayyan (founder of chemistry), Al-Biruni, and Ibn Sina laid the foundations of modern science. This was a direct result of the Quranic command of Tadabbur and the Prophetic encouragement of knowledge. [3]
The Cause of Decline: Our current scientific decline is not because of the Quran, but because we abandoned its teachings (reflection and contemplation) and due to socio-political instability.
Wisdom is the Lost Property of the Believer: Truth and knowledge are not the monopoly of any nation. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Wisdom is the lost property of the believer; wherever he finds it, he has the most right to it." [4]. Therefore, if a non-Muslim scientist (like Newton or Einstein) discovers a secret of the universe, he is effectively uncovering a "sign" of the universe created by Allah. We accept this discovery as our lost heritage, and it is a matter of joy, not shame, that the Quran’s claim is proven true.
Objection 2: "The principle of science is that you must forget God while researching; otherwise, it is not science."
Answer: This is the greatest intellectual fraud of the modern era, where Atheism is being sold under the name of science.
The Difference Between Two Principles: We must distinguish between Methodological Naturalism and Philosophical Naturalism.
Scientific Methodology: When a scientist enters a laboratory, they look at "How the universe works." They seek material causes. This part is correct.
Atheistic Philosophy: But when someone claims that "Because we found a material cause, there is no Creator behind it," this is not science; it is an atheistic philosophy.
The Conduct of a Muslim Scientist: A believer scientist does not "forget" God in the lab; rather, their faith is strengthened. They know they are researching "How my Lord created this system and how He is running it." Ibn al-Haytham wrote at the beginning of his research that he was doing this work to seek closeness to Allah. [5]
Conclusion: Faith is not an obstacle to research; it is the greatest motivator. History bears witness that one can be an exceptional scientist while believing in God.
6. Testimony and Support from Great Scholars
The path we are following is not a new innovation. Eminent Islamic scholars of the modern era have not only supported this mode of reasoning but have declared it a vital necessity of the time:
Maulana Sayyid Abul A'la Maududi: In his exegesis Tafhim-ul-Quran, he frequently discussed cosmic phenomena in light of modern information to aid Quranic understanding. [6]
Dr. Israr Ahmed: According to him, the greatest fitna of the modern age is "Scientific Atheism," and highlighting the intellectual and rational aspects of the Quran is indispensable to countering it. [7]
Dr. Zakir Naik: He has worked globally in this field, proving that while the Quran is not a "Book of Science," it provides guidance to science. [8]
