Some rare finds speak to me like no other.

It is the layers they reveal, traces of what they once were, the life they have already lived, and what they may become next.

These are often the very layers we are taught to cover, smooth over or hide. But I always tend to do the opposite. I want to uncover them, honour them, and let them remain part of the final piece. celebrating every mark, imperfection and trace of time with grace.

As we say in Portugal, some things are “feitas com vagar” — made slowly, without haste, with care and intention.

By far, one of my favourite expressions. It feels very close to the way I create.

Strata No. 01 - terracotta decorative pot

A hand-finished terracotta pot inspired by the quiet layering of stone, soil and time.

Creating a strong architectural rhythm around the form, while the surface is built up with earthy mineral tones, sandy textures and irregular deposits that settle differently across every curve.

Limited to one unique item.

Our packaging is never quite the same twice.

Because our pieces are handmade, fragile and often completely different in shape and weight, I don’t really follow one fixed packing formula. I work with what I have, and reuse as much as I can from, bubble wrap, kraft paper, foam blocks, little foam offcuts, cardboards leftovers … whatever helps me create the safe journey for each piece.

For heavier jars, I sometimes even double-box, placing one box inside another to give the piece a stronger layer of protection while travelling.

So when your Artisan by MF order arrives, don’t be surprised if the filling looks a little… invented and messy. 😌 It probably is.

It may not always be the prettiest part of the process, but a lot of thought goes into making sure something fragile, handmade and made with care reaches you safely.

And whenever possible, I always tend to choose to reuse before using something new.

There is never a strict plan when I start the work. The surface is built up slowly, basic tools and lots of hands involvement. adding earth tones, taking some away, then adding again. layers after layers until the "Aha" moment is here. Then the final hand waxing which somehow brings everything together and gives the surface that soft, time-worn feeling that I love. As if the pieces have already lived somewhere before finding their way into a new home.

Natura is made from a Portuguese fabric with a blend of linen and cotton, a natural Portuguese jute backing with a zipper for the filling.

For us, the making is about much more than the finished piece. It is about careful hands, small details, conversations, laughter, and relationships that have grown over time.

Handcrafted in Portugal

From my kitchen counter, surrounded by brushes, terra, sponges, jars and whatever else comes to hand along the way.

There is never really a fixed plan, and nothing is forced. I simply enjoy the process and let it unfold naturally, layer after layer. Touching, brushing, rubbing, removing, adding again… sometimes changing direction completely.

And then, at some point, the piece changes.

It starts to feel complete. Almost as if it looks back at me and says, “I am ready.”

That is usually when I stop.

Every piece from Touched by Earth finds its own character through the process. Each one carries the marks, layers and little imperfections of how it came to life.

No two will ever tell exactly the same story. 🤎

One of a Kind Decorative Terracotta Jar

A statement piece shaped slowly by time, "broken" with "wrinkles" and it is undeniable "aged". through layers of texture, earth and handwork. It has been individually transformed using natural patina, terra finishing and hand waxing.

Energised, in such a good mood, and the ideas just keep coming… then the brush, the feeling, and the hands take over.

No plan. No two pieces ever the same. Just enjoying the process and letting each one become what it wants to be.
