AARTIUM IN THE AZORES | EXPLORING MAS MAYA

As part of Mic’s recent site visit to the Azores, he spent time reviewing Mas Maya finishes for a future project.

Rooted in ancient Mayan tradition, Mas Maya is a natural, breathable mineral coating applied by hand to create seamless surfaces with subtle variation, texture and depth.

Its ability to move across walls, floors, bathrooms, furniture and pools makes it an interesting material for spaces where continuity and atmosphere are important.

Seeing the samples in person allowed us to assess the tonal differences, tactile quality and way each finish responds to light.

For Aartium, this kind of material research helps ensure that every surface supports the wider character and experience of a space.

AARTIUM IN THE AZORES | FROM FOREST TO TIMBER

During Mic’s site visit to the Azores, one of the visits followed the journey of Japanese cedar from agricultural forest to timber processing.

The cedar is taken through local production facilities where it is processed into lumber and prepared for different uses, from flooring, furniture and cladding to doors, frames, carpentry, decorative details and other design applications.

Seeing the timber in its natural and processed forms gave a clearer understanding of its character, potential and versatility. From raw cedar to refined finishes, each stage reveals something different about how the material can be used within a space.

AARTIUM IN THE AZORES | BASALT QUARRY VISIT

A closer look at one of Mic’s site visits to a local basalt quarry in the Azores.

As part of research for an upcoming project, Mic visited the quarry to understand how raw basalt stone is processed and transformed into finished products for architectural and building applications.

From crushing, cutting, milling, chiselling, hammering and grinding, the process shapes the stone into cladding, flooring, decorative architectural pieces and other finished elements.

At Aartium, material research is an important part of the design process. Understanding where a material comes from, how it is made, and how it can be used helps us create spaces with more depth, context and connection.

THE RETURN OF GREEN

Not as a trend.
As a feeling.

Green is finding its way back through stone, fabric, light, and natural textures.
Less polished. More grounded.

Olive trees.
Vintage glass.
Striped loungers.
Quiet terraces.
Rooms that feel collected over time.

Olive feels timeless.
Sage feels calm.
Forest green feels immersive.

But what makes green powerful is not the colour itself.
It’s the atmosphere it creates.

A slower rhythm.
Spaces that breathe.

Which green would you live with forever?

Aartium was founded around the idea that thoughtful architecture can shape how people experience a place.

Our approach combines hospitality design, interiors, and architecture through a slower and more intentional design process focused on atmosphere, proportion, light, and materiality.

We believe spaces become more meaningful when they respond carefully to landscape, culture, and the rhythm of their surroundings.

By working closely with context, craftsmanship, and human experience, we create hospitality, residential, retail, and restaurant environments designed to feel calm, timeless, and connected to place.

Some of the most important design decisions are not immediately visible.

A guest may not remember the material palette first.
But they will remember how a space made them feel.

The direction of light.
The calm of an open passage.
The transition from arrival to stillness.

Today, great hospitality design is often about how a space flows and feels as you move through it.

At Aartium, spatial clarity is considered from the very beginning, shaping environments that feel intuitive, calm, and connected to their surroundings.

Before architecture, there’s a feeling you can’t quite describe.

Along the coast in Cascais, it comes from the light, the stone, and how close everything is to the ocean. Those things have shaped buildings here for years.

Good hospitality design doesn’t try to fight that. It works with it.

At Aartium, we always start by understanding the place before we start designing.

Luxury in hospitality is changing.

For many years, hotels communicated prestige through scale, material richness and dramatic architectural gestures.

Today, the most memorable hospitality environments are rarely the most extravagant. They are the ones that feel coherent, intuitive and carefully resolved.

True luxury begins with spatial clarity. It continues through materials that mature with time. It depends on operational thinking that supports the building long after opening. And increasingly, it reflects its relationship to place.

When these elements are considered together, hospitality environments begin to feel calm rather than composed for effect.

At Aartium, hospitality design is approached as a spatial system where architecture, interiors and operational planning work together to create environments that remain relevant over time.

Because true luxury is no longer defined by spectacle. It is defined by clarity.

Luxury hospitality is rarely defined by what is immediately visible.

The spaces that feel calm and effortless are often the result of a quieter design process happening behind the scenes.

Materials are studied carefully.
Spatial layouts are refined.
Light, proportion and circulation are considered long before construction begins.

At Aartium, Founder and Design Director Michele (Mic) Grech-Cumbo approaches hospitality design as a long-term spatial experience rather than a decorative exercise.

The aim is not to create spectacle.

It is to create environments that feel balanced, intuitive and enduring.

Spaces that support both guests and the people who operate them.
Spaces that mature gracefully over time.
Often, the most important design decisions are the ones that remain invisible.
