The Opening Ceremony for Kodo 2026 (Pulsation), a large-scale bamboo installation by Iemoto Akane Teshigahara of Sogetsu School Japan, on 19th July 2026, was a historic event as it marked the 60th anniversary of Japan and Singapore diplomatic relations (SJ60), as well as the 60th Anniversary of the establishment of Singapore Sogetsu Association.

This unique and intriguing structure located at Singapore's Gardens by the Bay, is Iemoto's inaugural bamboo installation in Asia (excluding Japan).

Inspired by the beautiful landscape of the city, as well as the dynamic energy of its people, Pulsation brings the same energy and dynamism into every bamboo stalk. Architecturally, the bamboos have been placed in a radial pattern, shaped like a lion's mane, personifying majestic bravery - strengthening the imagery of Singapore built by Japanese art.

Bamboo has always played a major role in Sogetsu Ikebana and continues to inspire a multitude of creations due to it's strength, resilience and flexibility.

KODO 2026 (PULSATION) 鼓動, a monumental bamboo installation by Ms Akane Teshigahara, Fourth Iemoto (Headmaster) of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana, Tokyo, Japan. Presented by Singapore Sogetsu Association (SSA), the rare large-scale bamboo installation in Asia outside of Japan commemorates two significant milestones: the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Japan (SJ60) and the 60th anniversary of Singapore Sogetsu Association (SSA60).

The title "Kodo" (鼓動), meaning heartbeat or pulsation, expresses the living energy that runs through the installation. Through the strength, rhythm and movement of bamboo, the work celebrates creativity, resilience and the enduring human spirit.

Iemoto was inspired by the vibrant energy of the people of Singapore and its awe-inspiring cityscape, which evokes a sense of futurism. Arranged in a radial pattern, these lines embody a majestic bravery, evoking the mane of the lion—the symbol of Singapore.

Through "Kodo 2026 (Pulsation)", SSA is honoured to celebrate six decades of friendship between Singapore and Japan while sharing the beauty, innovation and spirit of Sogetsu Ikebana with the wider community.

We are proud to host Iemoto Akane Teshigahara from Sogetsu School Japan for our 60th anniversary Charity Fundraising events. Don't miss her large and impressive bamboo installation at the Flower Dome, Gardens by the Bay from 16th to 31st July, as well as her fabulous Sogetsu demonstration during the Gala Dinner on18th July 2026.

Tickets for the Charity Gala Dinner in aid of Club Rainbow, and seats for the afternoon workshop session with Iemoto Akane Teshigahara are still available. Come and watch her spectacular performance, as well as learn from Iemoto through her workshops. This years Charity Exhibition "Blooms beyond Time", begins with highlighting the hydrangea, a mass of lush, dense and compact flower made of tiny blooms, found in many varieties and colours in nature.

Often associated with profound understanding, connection, appreciation as well as apology, the hydrangea offers a meaningful, graceful and timeless material in ikebana.

Come and immerse yourself in the Sogetsu Ikebana art, connecting hydrangeas with multiple materials, waiting to elevate your senses and inspire your future creations.

Founded on the philosophy of “Charity through Flowers,” SSA has, for decades, used the art of Sogetsu Ikebana to connect creativity with compassion. As we mark our 60th anniversary, this exhibition holds special meaning as part of our ongoing fundraising efforts in support of Club Rainbow, an organisation dedicated to empowering children with chronic illnesses and their families.

Through each arrangement, we hope to share not only the beauty of floral art, but also a message of hope, strength, and giving — where every bloom carries a deeper purpose beyond time.

Singapore Sogetsu Association held its AGM on 23rd April 2026, followed by a demonstration and workshop by Mr. Bernard Tay. The theme: Beyond Flowers, gave birth to the idea of creatively using soft metal wires, manipulated and shaped to a desired form & structure, neatly combined with either washi or coloured straw, as part of the design or as accents. In one of the pieces, acrylic rods were used to secure and stabilize the structure, whilst brushes were added as mass, resulting in an ikebana without the use of water.

Mr. Bernard Tay also demonstrated a simple wire creation for the workshop. A similar material was distributed to all participants to try to create their own metal structures in their ikebana.

Indeed, this excited many members who tried their best to produce designs given the short time frame. We hope members were able to learn a lot from this experience and will not hesitate to try more unconventional materials in their ikebana.

On 15th March 2026, Mr. Bernard Tay gave an interesting Sogetsu demonstration titled, "Lines in Motion - the spirit of Sogetsu" under the invitation of Ikebana International Singapore Chp 135, to a mixed audience at Ngee Ann City.

Mr. Tay used many natural elements in his demonstration, some painted in bright colours, and some in natural form, to add interest, creativity, movement and depth in his ikebana. The different styles and treatment resulted in refreshing forms in a naturalized way.

Our 3rd Sogetsu Ikebana by Mrs. Josephine Chia (Riji), graced the Japanese room with anthuriums, cherry blossoms, oncidium, bamboo and palm leaves, including bleached palm.

Dancing in the quiet space, with bursts of colours to enhance the atmosphere.
