This year, I’m starting this aquascape a little late for the IAPLC, so I may not be able to submit it in time by the end of May 2026. That might actually be a good thing though 😊
It means I’ll be able to share the full progress of this tank with all of you, instead of keeping it a secret until the results are announced many months later (probably around September this year? 😄). If the tank turns out well, I can always submit it to another aquascaping contest. For now, sharing is the priority — especially to make up for the time I’ve been away recently due to the house move. Haha 😄
So, the first share is about the hardscape building process 🌿
When creating a hardscape, I usually first take note of where the tank is placed in the room, then decide on the layout composition. Think about which side of the tank will be viewed the most during your daily routine, and make that side especially appealing with the focal points you want to highlight.
It’s also important to visualize your future planting scheme and leave enough space for the background, midground, and foreground. This helps the scape grow naturally over time without feeling overcrowded later on.
Bonus tip: I normally don’t add the sand foreground at the beginning. I wait until the hardscape is fully settled and stable, with minimal soil disturbance. Only then do I add the sand to avoid unsightly soil grains showing up on the bright foreground sand 😄
And keep the hardscape as it is for a day or two before filling the tank with water. This gives you time to observe and decide if any small tweaks are needed. Of course, the scape is never truly “finished” at this stage — details can always be added along the way.
Aquascaping is really a game of patience and observation 🌿
