Tiny tank, tiny world, big enjoyment.

Curious how it was made? I recorded a tutorial on the LitiAquaria YouTube channel 😉

There’s something special about enjoying the tank at night. All the lights are off, and only the planted tank is glowing quietly… just sink in. 🌿✨

Colourful tanks have always been my go-to for planted aquariums 🌿
It often feels like painting when I arrange the colours in an aquascape.

To truly understand the colours of aquatic plants, we need to grow them over time — observing how they change under different conditions, whether in high-tech or low-tech setups, high energy or low energy environments. Each plant shows a different tone, texture, and leaf pattern depending on how it’s grown.

It never stops amazing me, discovering these variations 😊

Have a great weekend, folks! Hope you continue exploring the colourful world of aquatic plants 🌿✨

My AGAS 2024 aquascape is still running today, and it’s becoming more and more attractive as time goes by 🌿

You can really see the passage of time — a kind of wabi-sabi feeling in this scape. When a tank carries good memories, you just want to keep it for as long as possible.

This scape received a Gold Prize that year, and one of the key ideas was long-term sustainability. And here we are — two years later — and it’s still going strong and looking beautiful 😊

If you’d like to see how it was built, feel free to check out the AGAS 2024 contest tank video on the LitiAquaria YouTube channel.

Cheers, and have a great evening 🌿

While waiting for the big tank to grow, I’m still enjoying my other nano tanks 🌿

I’ve kept both my AGAS 2024 and AGAS 2025 tanks with me through the recent house move. They hold really great memories — and also show that an aquascape can be maintained beautifully over a long time. I guess that’s part of the scoring criteria too, isn’t it? 😄 Long-term sustainability matters.

Today, while making coffee ☕, I noticed this angle and thought it looked really nice. Sometimes, a clean surface without clutter can reveal a different side of the scape — almost like unlocking another level of beauty.

What do you think? 😊

Finally, the water has cleared up, and I guess the cycling process is complete 🌿
These days, I’ve been a bit lazy to do full water testing, but from the look of it, everything seems to be in order. Now, the tank is ready for planting. 👌😁

Planting is quite easy for me this time, as I’ve been growing plenty of stem plants and other species in my existing tanks. Just “cut and plant” from one tank to another haha… so convenient! 😄

Even with lots of plants, the tank still looks a bit empty after planting. I guess now it’s just a matter of time and patience, letting everything grow in and take shape.🌿

It’s always a joy to watch the tank slowly come together 😊🌱

As expected, the potency of The 2Hr Aquarist APT Feast and Vũ Aqua base substrate is no joke 😄

Over the past few days, I’ve had to do almost 100% daily water changes. Haha… 💦 But after a few rounds like that, hopefully the water will be clear up. 👌

The dark-start cycling is still ongoing though. I’ve added more beneficial bacteria to help speed up the process a little. It also looks like a bacterial bloom is happening, which makes the water turn quite murky — but that is totally normal.

At this stage, the best thing to do is simply let the tank settle on its own for a while. Things will slowly return to balance 🌿

After each water change, I keep the tank lights completely off and just let the filters do their work. No rush at all — I genuinely enjoy this part of the process.

While looking at the empty tank every day, I can slowly visualize and prepare for the next phase: planting 🌱

Stay tuned 😄

My next sharing is about flooding the tank 🌿

Once the hardscape is more or less in place, flooding is the next step. For this tank, since I’ve added quite a lot of base substrate (Vũ Aqua Base Substrate) together with The 2Hr Aquarist APT Feast, I expect the tank will need to go through a dark-start cycling period, as both are very potent. Because of that, I won’t be doing any planting just yet.

When flooding the tank, I like to use a garden hose with a shower head attachment, as the water flow is dispersed and doesn’t disturb the substrate too much. It’s a very useful tool to have if you keep planted tanks, as you’ll probably end up using it for every future water change as well 😊

A small tip: use a large clip to secure it to the tank so you don’t need to hold it the whole time. But do keep an eye on it… otherwise you might end up overflowing the tank like I did several times while watching Netflix 😆📺💦

For now, I’m using a water conditioner / anti-chlorine treatment (JBL Biotopol) during the initial fill. Once the tank is fully topped up, I then dose beneficial bacteria (JBL Denitrol). It acts as a bacterial starter containing highly active beneficial bacteria that help break down ammonium / ammonia and nitrite in a new tank. This is especially helpful since my filter is also running with new biomedia.😊👌

This year, I’m starting this aquascape a little late for the IAPLC, so I may not be able to submit it in time by the end of May 2026. That might actually be a good thing though 😊

It means I’ll be able to share the full progress of this tank with all of you, instead of keeping it a secret until the results are announced many months later (probably around September this year? 😄). If the tank turns out well, I can always submit it to another aquascaping contest. For now, sharing is the priority — especially to make up for the time I’ve been away recently due to the house move. Haha 😄

So, the first share is about the hardscape building process 🌿

When creating a hardscape, I usually first take note of where the tank is placed in the room, then decide on the layout composition. Think about which side of the tank will be viewed the most during your daily routine, and make that side especially appealing with the focal points you want to highlight.

It’s also important to visualize your future planting scheme and leave enough space for the background, midground, and foreground. This helps the scape grow naturally over time without feeling overcrowded later on.

Bonus tip: I normally don’t add the sand foreground at the beginning. I wait until the hardscape is fully settled and stable, with minimal soil disturbance. Only then do I add the sand to avoid unsightly soil grains showing up on the bright foreground sand 😄

And keep the hardscape as it is for a day or two before filling the tank with water. This gives you time to observe and decide if any small tweaks are needed. Of course, the scape is never truly “finished” at this stage — details can always be added along the way.

Aquascaping is really a game of patience and observation 🌿

A Nature Aquarium doesn’t always have to look perfectly trimmed 🌿

Letting plants grow a little wild creates depth, shelter, and a more natural environment for fish. This style encourages stronger plant growth, provides hiding spaces, and helps the tank feel closer to nature rather than a display piece. Controlled wildness, balanced by regular maintenance, often results in a healthier and more resilient aquarium. 😊

Finally settling in and getting ready to work on this big tank 🌿💪

After the move, I’m slowly gathering the equipment and materials for this setup (150×60×60 cm, 540 L). First step is to check everything and make sure it’s all in good working order before getting started.

Big thanks to Dennis for the FEAST 😍 The packaging is impressive — looking forward to letting the plants enjoy it soon.

Step by step. Let’s begin.🥰
