I thoroughly enjoyed the dishes too!

My dearest mum Lau Biau Chin was a concert pianist who was studying at the Royal Academy of Music in London in the 1950’s. She brought me up single handedly whilst teaching the piano on her return. She was very strict about my daily hourly practice on the piano and violin. She said, If you don’t practice there will be no dinner!’ So as a hungry child from 5 years old I practiced!

She then made me help her prepare and cook dinner for the family. There were 6 of us including my loving grandmother, two uncles and an aunt. I learnt all the basics of cooking, marinating the meat, washing vegetables, pounding chilli with garlic and ginger and cooking the rice in a pot.

I am grateful to my mum for making me the nurturing mother I am and violinist from instilling discipline in me. She was a great cook and pianist. That’s why I know piano repertoire so well as she was always practicing between students.

This is the upbringing that made me cook and host in my private dining at home. Your food was my reward with love.

Thank you mum. I was blessed to grow up with your loving but strict upbringing.
