Stepping into Nora Chipaumire’s (nora chipaumire) GADZĪ felt like being transported somewhere else. The huge “boulders” immediately caught my attention and the Zimbabwean music! I was literally thinking, “Wait… who moved these massive rocks into the gallery?” 😂 Only to be even more in awe when I found out they were actually handmade structures!
I later read that Chipaumire’s gesture was to protect the energy of the landscape, drawing inspiration from Zimbabwean landscapes, Shona traditions and the spiritual significance of its rocks. And honestly, I think I felt that energy.
After the exhibition, I found myself googling and reading more about Zimbabwe, Shona traditions and the ideas behind the work. I love when an exhibition does that, you leave not only with a memory, but having learnt something completely new. 🤩
