Poul Kjærholm: The Furniture Architect

Poul Kjærholm saw furniture as more than an object within a room. He considered himself a furniture architect, believing that furniture plays an essential role in how a space is experienced.

A trained cabinetmaker, his design language was shaped by a deep understanding of material, proportion, form and function, with steel playing a central role in his work alongside leather, wood, marble and other materials.

His philosophy extended to his own home, where his designs became part of the architecture itself.

Among his many defining works, the PK 31™ captures this philosophy particularly well. Precise proportions, a calm architectural presence and the tactile quality of leather come together in a design that balances function with sculptural clarity.

The Making of the Swan™: Thai Crafted Edition.
