“Perhaps It Was Waiting for Me, Too”
This Buddha statue restoration was introduced by a longtime client.
I had previously restored a Buddha for her,
and this time, she referred a friend with another statue in need.
By chance, just a few days before,
I went to the motor vehicles office to handle some paperwork—
and happened to run into her there.
She smiled and said, “I was just about to reach out to you.”
Soon after, she visited my studio with her friend’s Buddha.
This piece proved more challenging than the last.
The wrist and arm were fractured but hadn’t fallen apart,
as they were still held together by a braided grass cord from within.
This internal structure made dismantling and repair even more intricate.
To add to the challenge, the surface gold had oxidized.
I tested pigment after pigment,
searching for the perfect match in tone and texture—
until I finally found a glow that felt right.
When the restoration was complete,
the client’s eyes showed peace and satisfaction.
And I believe this Buddha, too, felt our care and sincerity.
Sometimes, the meeting between a person and an object
isn’t coincidence—
but a perfectly timed encounter.
