🧪 CLEAN TALK with Gibson Embers
Episode 037 • Myth vs. Fact
🩷 WAIT… THAT PINK STUFF IN YOUR SHOWER ISN’T MOLD?! 😳
You know the stuff.
That weird pinkish-orange film that starts showing up around your shower drain, grout, caulk, sink or even inside the toilet.
Most of us take one look at it and think:
“Great. Mold.” 🙄
Except…
🧪 IT MAY NOT BE MOLD AT ALL.
One common culprit behind that pink bathroom buildup is a bacterium called Serratia marcescens.
Yep.
BACTERIA. 🦠
Serratia can produce a reddish-pink pigment, which is where that lovely little pop of bathroom color comes from. 😂
And bathrooms happen to give it a pretty cozy place to hang out.
💧 Moisture
🌡️ Warmth
🧼 Residue and organic material
Basically, your shower said:
“Would you like a damp little condo?”
And Serratia said:
“Absolutely.” 😂
🩷 SO WHY DOES IT KEEP COMING BACK?!
Because wiping away the pink film removes what you can SEE…
but if the conditions that helped it grow are still there, it can return.
That means keeping bathroom surfaces cleaner, drier and improving ventilation so everything isn’t sitting damp for hours can help make the environment a whole lot less inviting.
And here's an important distinction:
🧽 CLEANING ≠ DISINFECTING.
Cleaning physically removes dirt, residue and microorganisms from a surface.
Disinfecting uses an appropriate product to kill microorganisms on the surface and it needs to be used exactly according to its label, including the required contact or dwell time.
Usually?
CLEAN FIRST.
Then disinfect when appropriate.
Because remember our Clean Talk lesson about dwell time?
Spray-and-immediately-wipe isn't necessarily disinfecting anything. 👀
⚠️ And before you attack that pink stuff with every cleaner under your sink:
DON’T MIX CLEANING PRODUCTS.
If you're using a disinfectant, make sure it's appropriate for the surface and follow the label directions.
🖤 THE BOTTOM LINE
That pinkish-orange stuff hanging around your bathroom may look like mold…
but one common culprit is actually BACTERIA.
And if it keeps returning?
Your bathroom isn't personally attacking you. 😂
It may just be giving those microorganisms exactly what they love:
MOISTURE + RESIDUE + TIME. 🧪
💬 LET’S TALK ABOUT IT!
