As we build our business, something that we’ve agreed upon that is important to us is preserving history as best as we can.
So when we found this beautiful, antique, reverse glass painting of the U.S. Capitol Building (more than likely produced by the Chicago Portrait Company), we tried to find it the perfect home - locally.
Unfortunately, that didn’t happen.
After many, many months of being listed in our marketplace shops, we decided to allow for shipping.
Within days, someone purchased it and our hearts sunk.
Not because it sold, but rather how in the world could we ensure that this fragile antique - that had lasted in tact since 1910 - would survive being mailed?!
The truth is, the convex (bubble) glass that creates its unique 3D effect wouldn’t survive and we just couldn’t get out ourselves to ship it.
So what to do.
After a long talk, we emailed our buyer back to let him know that indeed we wouldn’t mail it to him.
Instead, we were going to drive it out to him. However… we didn’t hear back from him. This isn’t all that unusual, so we took a leap of faith a drove 5 hours (one way) to deliver it.
Thankfully, when we approached, he was home.
Not only that, he invited us in to see where he was going to put it in his office.
Can you imagine to our surprise, he had created the perfect gap on the wall where this antique painting was just waiting to be hung. He was so delighted and surprised that we would go out of our way to drive 10 hours round trip to make sure it made it safely to him.
Although we lost money on delivering it, we had a lovely roadtrip, spent afternoon investigating new thrift and antique stores in Oklahoma City, and most importantly we’re delighted found the perfect home for this incredible antique.
