☕️ Sunday Slowdown

What have I learned from collecting old things? 🤍

That the most beautiful things in life are rarely the newest.

I’ve learned to appreciate the beauty of a well-worn edge, the charm of a tiny imperfection, and the stories that seem to live inside an old piece of porcelain, a silver bowl, or a painting in a gilded frame.

I’ve learned that things made with care never really go out of style, that a home should tell a story rather than follow a trend, and that the thrill of finding something special is often just as wonderful as bringing it home.

Most of all, I’ve learned that collecting old things isn’t really about the things themselves. It’s about history, craftsmanship, curiosity, and the joy of surrounding yourself with objects that make you feel connected to another time.

Some things are worth keeping simply because they have lasted. And perhaps that’s what I love most about antiques: they remind us that beautiful things, like meaningful stories, deserve to be passed along. 🕊️

Ever wondered how to tell these beautiful Chinese porcelain styles apart — and how old your piece might be? Here’s your quick guide! ✨

🌸 Famille Rose: The broader enamel family known for its beautiful pinks, greens, and opaque colors.

🌺 Rose Medallion: Look for alternating panels of Chinese figures and flowers, birds, and butterflies.

🦋 Rose Canton: Similar colors and gilding, but featuring flowers, birds, and butterflies without human figures.

👑 Rose Mandarin: Elaborate Chinese figural scenes take center stage, often depicting courtly or domestic life.

🕰️ Now, how do you date them? Examine the foot rim and base, study the enamels and gilding, research any marks, and look for wear consistent with age. Compare your piece with documented examples, too!

Many pieces date to the 19th century, while the famille rose tradition began in the 18th century. These styles overlap, and later reproductions exist, so the pattern or mark alone cannot confirm an exact date.
