I think cats believe themselves to be very helpful creatures. I put their little window seat close by so they could watch me paint, but that wasn’t quite good enough for these two. Maybe the paw prints will make this cat painting more authentic! 😂

Helping my girls at their Forest Fair booth. I’m so proud of all the work they’ve put in these past few months. It’s fun having the roles reversed and being their employee after all of the times they’ve helped me!

Gouache homework. This one looked a lot better a few days ago! I don’t recommend getting distracted by beautiful summer days and leaving your unfinished painting by a window for a week to bake in the blazing sun. I was actually surprised by how much the colors faded in that amount of time. I touched up some of the colors as you can see in the second picture, but couldn’t do all of them without really making a mess. Good thing it was just for practice and not a commission!

Gouache homework: it’s a bit of a mess but it was good practice on painting in a more loose style and softening and blending layers. Dry gouache reactivates with water, which can be frustrating when you don’t want it to, but it can also result in some really beautiful effects if you do it right.

Gouache class homework day 2. I kind of like this moody mountain valley- the contrast between the purples and greens and the light and shadow. I included a picture of what I call the “ugly stage”. I’m learning that all gouache paintings seem to have an ugly stage that makes you want to give up and tear them to pieces, but if you push past that, you get to the magic.

I signed up for a gouache class and I’m finally getting around to doing my “homework”. I’ve been feeling a little burned out and uninspired this year, and need to get back to painting for fun and not just doing commissions. This class gets me out of my comfort zone a little and using new color palettes and scenes I maybe wouldn’t have thought to paint. I’m trying to only spend an hour or so on each one. This first one taught me more about color theory. I love that these bright blue trees appear white to the eyes because of the colors around them. I do hate that I added the orange blobby leaves on the top- just following the lesson but I liked it better without them!

My latest pet portrait- a pretty toller mix with a little Steller’s jay buddy and a patch of Alaskan wildflowers. I hope it brings her family joy and lots of happy memories of this very good girl!
