Gouache homework: it’s a bit of a mess but it was good practice on painting in a more loose style and softening and blending layers. Dry gouache reactivates with water, which can be frustrating when you don’t want it to, but it can also result in some really beautiful effects if you do it right.

Gouache class homework day 2. I kind of like this moody mountain valley- the contrast between the purples and greens and the light and shadow. I included a picture of what I call the “ugly stage”. I’m learning that all gouache paintings seem to have an ugly stage that makes you want to give up and tear them to pieces, but if you push past that, you get to the magic.

I signed up for a gouache class and I’m finally getting around to doing my “homework”. I’ve been feeling a little burned out and uninspired this year, and need to get back to painting for fun and not just doing commissions. This class gets me out of my comfort zone a little and using new color palettes and scenes I maybe wouldn’t have thought to paint. I’m trying to only spend an hour or so on each one. This first one taught me more about color theory. I love that these bright blue trees appear white to the eyes because of the colors around them. I do hate that I added the orange blobby leaves on the top- just following the lesson but I liked it better without them!

“Henry”- 8 in x 8 in gouache on 300 cold press paper.
Our foster kitten has the cutest little face and I just had to paint him. The original will be available at the Spring Makers Market at APU on the 18th. (And baby Henry will be available for adoption in a few weeks if anyone is looking for the sweetest little kitten in the world.)

Time to head back to the cold. This quick little gouache of Oneuli Beach will have to get finished up at home!
