It's a common assumption that the air outside, particularly in areas without obvious pollution sources, is worse than the air inside a home. EPA research has repeatedly found the opposite to often be true — indoor air pollutant levels can run two to five times higher than outdoor levels in some homes, even in regions with genuinely good outdoor air quality.
A number of common indoor sources contribute to this, many of which aren't obviously identified as pollution sources in everyday thinking. Cooking, especially on a gas stove, releases nitrogen dioxide and fine particulates directly into indoor air. Cleaning products, even ones marketed as natural, frequently release volatile organic compounds, commonly abbreviated as VOCs, both during use and for some time afterward. New furniture, carpet, and paint go through a process called off-gassing, releasing VOCs that can continue for weeks or even months after installation, well after the obvious "new" smell has faded. Candles and air fresheners contribute their own combustion byproducts and fragrance compounds to indoor particulate and VOC levels. Dust mites and pet dander accumulate steadily in carpet, bedding, and upholstery, becoming airborne with normal household activity like walking across a room or sitting on a couch.
The factor that ties all of this together and makes it worse than it would otherwise be is ventilation, or more specifically, the lack of it. Modern, well-sealed, energy-efficient homes are excellent at keeping conditioned air inside, which is genuinely good for heating and cooling bills. The same sealing that keeps the temperature stable also keeps all of the pollutants generated inside the home from exchanging out with fresh outdoor air at the rate older, leakier homes naturally allowed.
A handful of practical adjustments meaningfully improve indoor air quality without requiring major renovation. Using the kitchen exhaust fan every time you cook, particularly with a gas stove, vents combustion byproducts directly outside rather than letting them accumulate indoors. Opening windows for even a few minutes daily, on days when outdoor air quality is reasonably good, allows for a genuine air exchange that a sealed home doesn't get on its own. Choosing low-VOC paints and finishes during any renovation or furniture purchase reduces the off-gassing contribution significantly compared to standard options. And vacuuming regularly with a vacuum that has a genuine HEPA filter, rather than a standard vacuum that can recirculate fine particles back into the air through its exhaust, helps manage the dust and dander side of the equation.
None of this means a well-sealed, efficient home is a bad thing — the energy savings are real and worthwhile. It simply means that same sealing creates a need for active air management that older, draftier homes didn't require as urgently.
