Thoughts on my collection. Titled

“Contemporary Curiosity”

George Simms creates sculptures that inhabit the space between the natural and the imagined. Drawing from botanical forms, antiquities, curiosities, and the traditions of the cabinet of wonders, his work transforms familiar materials into objects that feel simultaneously ancient, organic, and strangely alive.

HIVE MINDED
George Simms
Found-object assemblage

Hive Minded explores the quiet intelligence that emerges when disparate things gather together. An antique apothecary bottle, organic fragments, stone, translucent amber glass and metal are assembled into a precarious vertical ecosystem. Like the collective consciousness of a hive, each element retains its individual character while becoming part of something larger—an imagined organism built from memory, nature and discarded human objects.

GEORGIANA
By George Simms

Some sculptures begin with an object. This one began with a little girl.

Georgiana is inspired by our five-year-old sister-in-law—a child whose curiosity, joy, and imagination seem to make ordinary things feel extraordinary. Rather than creating a portrait, I wanted to capture that feeling.

An antique Columbia Violet Toilet Water bottle became the foundation, carrying the quiet history of another life. From its opening grows a tangle of delicate fibers, colorful glass, and tiny blossoms, as if memories and wonder have found a way to bloom from something long forgotten.

Children have a remarkable gift: they don’t see discarded objects. They see possibilities. A bottle becomes a treasure, a handful of colorful beads becomes a garden, and yesterday’s forgotten things become tomorrow’s story.

This piece is a reminder that innocence has a way of transforming the ordinary into the magical—and that the people who inspire us often do so without ever realizing it.

To Georgiana, thank you for reminding us that the world is still full of wonder.

Green has always been one of history’s happiest colors. For centuries, it symbolized renewal, prosperity, and a love of the natural world. In Georgian and Victorian homes, green-painted furniture brought gardens indoors, adding a sense of freshness and sophistication to richly decorated rooms. It was bold without being loud—a color that somehow felt both elegant and playful.

That’s exactly why I love this antique faux bamboo bench. Its rich green finish has the charm of old English country houses and the relaxed glamour of Palm Beach style. The color still feels just as cheerful today as it did over a century ago.

To give it a little extra luxury, I paired it with a plush Italian velvet cushion. Italy has been producing some of the world’s finest velvet since the Renaissance, when master weavers in cities like Venice, Florence, and Genoa created sumptuous fabrics for royalty and nobility. Even today, Italian velvet is prized for its rich pile, luminous sheen, and exceptional craftsmanship.

Together, the antique green frame and sumptuous Italian velvet create a piece that feels timeless—proof that great design doesn’t follow trends. Sometimes, all a room needs is a little history… and a little green!
