Homemade Pressed Flower Suncatchers for Windows

🛒 Materials Needed:

• Fresh flowers or leaves

• Heavy books or a flower press

• Wax paper

• Scissors

• Clear contact paper or laminating sheets

• Ribbon or string (for hanging)

👩‍🍳 Directions:

1️⃣ Prepare the Flowers: Select fresh flowers or leaves and carefully remove any excess foliage. Ensure they are clean and completely dry before pressing.

2️⃣ Press the Flowers: Place the prepared flowers between two sheets of wax paper. Apply pressure using heavy books or a flower press, and leave them pressed for several days to a week until fully dried and flat.

3️⃣ Cut the Shapes: Once the flowers are dried, gently remove them from the wax paper. Cut the contact paper or laminating sheets into your desired shapes or sizes to fit the pressed flowers.

4️⃣ Assemble the Suncatchers: Lay the dried flowers onto one piece of contact paper or laminating sheet. Carefully cover with another piece, sealing the flowers inside and removing any air bubbles or wrinkles.

5️⃣ Trim Excess: Use scissors to neatly trim around the edges of the contact paper or laminating sheet, creating a clean border around your design.

6️⃣ Add a Hanging Option: Attach a ribbon or string to the top of your suncatcher for hanging. Secure it with tape or adhesive if necessary to ensure it stays in place.

7️⃣ Display: Hang your finished suncatchers in windows where sunlight can illuminate them, casting colorful shadows and adding a touch of natural beauty to your space.

🎯 Project Summary:

⏰ Estimated Time: 10 minutes (plus 7 days for pressing)

Melted Bead Suncatchers
Ingredients:
- Translucent plastic pony beads (assorted colors)
- Metal baking molds, muffin tins, or cookie cutters
- Drill or heated skewer (to make hanging hole)

Directions:
1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
2. Gather your assorted colorful pony beads. Choose a mix of colors for a vibrant effect.
3. Place the beads into your chosen metal baking molds, muffin tins, or cookie cutters. Fill them to the top, as the beads will melt down.
4. Carefully put the molds in the preheated oven.
5. Bake the beads for about 15-20 minutes. Keep an eye on them to ensure they melt but do not burn.
6. Once the beads have melted and fused together, use oven mitts to carefully remove the molds from the oven.
7. Allow the molds to cool completely, which may take about 30 minutes. The melted beads will solidify as they cool.
8. After they are cool, gently pop the suncatchers out of the molds.
9. Use a drill or heated skewer to make a small hole at the top of each suncatcher for hanging.
10. Attach a string or fishing line through the hole and hang your beautiful suncatchers where they can catch the sunlight. Enjoy the colorful reflections!

Tips & Variations:
- Experiment with different shapes and sizes by using various molds or cookie cutters, which can create unique designs.
- To add an extra element of fun, mix in some clear beads or glitter with your pony beads for a sparkly effect!

Perfect for rainy days or classroom activities.
Here’s how to make it step by step.

- Glitter

Step 1
Mix clear glue with a spoonful of baking soda.

Step 2
Add a few drops of food coloring and stir.

Ocean-Themed Shell Keepsakes
Ingredients / Materials
1 cup cornstarch
1/2 cup white glue (PVA glue)
1/4 cup warm water (adjust as needed)
Blue food colouring or liquid watercolor
Clear hair gel or clear crafting gel (for ocean “water” effect)
Small seashells (cleaned and dried)
Silicone molds (wave, starfish, shell shapes)
Mixing bowl
Spoon or spatula
Toothpick or skewer (for positioning shells)
Optional: fine glitter (for shimmer effect)
Instructions
1. Make the base mixture
In a bowl, mix cornstarch, white glue, and warm water until you get a thick, smooth paste.
It should feel like soft clay—add a little more cornstarch if too sticky.
2. Prepare the ocean tint
Divide the mixture into two parts:
Leave one part white (sand-like base)
Tint the other part with blue food colouring for an ocean tone
3. Fill the molds
Press a thin layer of the white mixture into the bottom of each silicone mold.
Add a small amount of the blue-tinted mixture on top, swirling slightly for a “water wave” effect.
Use a toothpick to gently blend edges for a natural ocean look.
4. Add the shells
Press small seashells lightly into the mixture while it is still soft.
Arrange them so some are partially embedded and some sit on top for depth.
5. Add glossy “water” layer
Spoon a thin layer of clear hair gel or crafting gel over the top.
This creates a translucent ocean-like finish.
6. Set and dry
Leave molds to dry for 24–48 hours at room temperature.
Once firm, carefully pop them out of the silicone molds.
7. Finish (optional)
Add a light dusting of glitter for a sparkling sea effect.
You can seal with clear varnish if you want extra shine and durability.
