This shop in Florence is famous across Italy as a unique source for esoteric chemicals, gums, and materials. It is a mostly unchanged apothecary shop from 1842. While there last month, I picked up some gum benzoin- used to impart a vanilla scent to the inside of my boxes and give a harder finish. The stuff in the bottle was probably older than me, but it still smelled good when shaken. Another notable purchase a few years ago was the dried bile of an ox- a material used in gilding conservation.
