Long time no posts, my friends! I have been super focused on costuming a local production of The Sound of Music. I finished making the last costume at intermission on opening night last Thursday. Since then I have been making repairs and using leftover curtain fabric to make masks for the kids. They wear clear masks onstage, but they loved their curtain costumes so much, I wanted to make them something to have as a weird souvenir. A true sign of the times. Meanwhile, kids 5 years old and up are eligible to be vaccinated now. My kiddos got jabbed today. So this might be my last post as Sew Susan Masks, and I think that’s okay. Thank you for trusting me to help keep you safe. I hope everyone is well. And as Gretl here says, “So long, farewell!”

Hi all! It’s been a while... I was hoping COVID was under control enough that I could retire, but it seems that masks are making a comeback. I’m especially concerned for the kiddos going back to school this fall before a vaccine is available for them. So I wanted to post and let you know I’m still making masks if you need any more. For the kids, might I recommend my style of masks that go around the head? They’re handy because they can pull them around their necks outside at recess and not lose them. And as always, I can do adjustable or fixed ear loops. Stay safe, my friends!

Happy Spring Fam! I have some limited edition spring patterns and wanted to re-introduce a few old favorites for those in want of a springy mask-collection refresh. Masks are still $7 a piece. Attach them to your head with ties, elastic around the ears, or elastic around the head. Optional features available: aluminum nose pieces and toggles to make the ear elastics adjustable.

Hello everyone! It’s been a long while since I’ve posted anything. I’ve been kinda laying low over the holidays and through the eventful few weeks of politics, but I wanted to pop in an share the idea of double masking. I’ve noticed it more and more on our leaders and in the press. With the continued unfavorable trends in this virus’ infection rates and with the introduction of a new strain, experts are starting to recommend we double up on our protection. Think of it like layers of Swiss cheese - no mask is going to be 100% effective, but by adding more properly fitted layers, and maybe different types of layers, it could help protect you even more. The masks I make are two layers of high quality cotton, but are they enough? Maybe for most tasks and outings, but if you’re going to be in crowds or around those who are possibly infected, please consider adding an N95 (which I understand are more and more available) or a disposable surgical mask underneath. Not trying to put myself out of business, I’ll happily keep making fun and comfy-but-properly-fitting masks for you, but I’m really concerned and thought I’d share this idea. My normal adult masks are definitely sized big enough to wear over an N95 and will extend its life to a point. And as always, please practice good hygiene by washing your reusable masks every time you wear them. Stay safe!

Wine bag prototype #3. This one has a handle but is not quite reversible. I tried a different color blocking arrangement to highlight some cute material (thanks Christine!). Needs a good ironing, but I was too excited about this one and had to share!

Coming soon: wine/whisky/balsamic bottle gift bags! I’m just testing out styles now. This one cinches and is reversible. But it doesn’t have handles. (Don’t worry, I’m still making masks as fast as I can! Do you have enough for the Fall and Winter holidays?)

I saw one of my masks “in the wild” on a customer on another business’ page. I can tell by the pattern and stitching that it’s one of mine. How exciting!

I got caught up on my masks orders this week so I could take a break this weekend because Halloween is only a couple weeks away and these costumes aren’t going to make themselves! Here’s my son in his Lord of the Rings wizard’s robes. He has a pointy wizard hat somewhere (like Mickey Mouse’s hat in Fantasia).

I made 16 masks for my Girl Scouts today, that’s a new record for me. I am going to knock out some other ones after dinner to make it an even 20. Whew! The color isn’t as perfect with the Junior GS vests as I thought last night, but my daughter loves them and they’re close enough.

As much as I hate the thought of it, I don’t think we’ll be past the need for masks by winter, so I made my first winter/holiday fabric purchase today. Coming soon, Green Celebration and Blue Snowflakes. What other themes should I look for? Snowmen? Plaid? Team green and red? or blue and silver?

NEW FEATURE AVAILABLE: I was recently encouraged to look into the nose wire strips to help with shaping and avoiding fogging of glasses. Turns out they’re not expensive and I figured out my own little way of sewing them into the masks. I’m excited about them. I think they do help, so I’m going to encourage new orders accept the use of them. The only drawback I see if they could eventually wear out and snap with time. I still want you to be able to wash and dry on high and I think encasing/sewing them in the mask itself will allow for that.

For those who have already bought masks from me without nose strips, I would be happy to send you some. They have some fairly strong adhesive (stronger the longer you wait) so you could just slap one on the outside and be fine for one of two uses (recommend washing in a mesh bag just in case it falls off). I’d also be happy to share which ones I got off of Amazon if you want to get some of your own.

Anyhoo, I think this is a worthy, exciting feature upgrade. I don’t see a need to increase prices at this point. So yay, who needs more masks? 😋

I ran out of my lovely “Petite Blue and Gold Flowers” fabric that was more popular than I expected, so I went in search of more fabric to fill the void. Introducing Petite Pink Flowers and Green Fern. Both are a small pattern compared to others (red roses on black and on lavender, I’m looking at you), perfect for a subtle, understated look.
